I have met several people who don't even notice or care that their blinds are closed. It leaves me baffled. Sunlight is everything to me.

My windows facing the street on the first floor I leave the shades closed during the week. All other shades get opened every day. I love the sunlight!
Windows only get opened during the short period of time when it’s actually spring weather here (always feels like it goes from winter to summer with very little in between).

In Brooklyn. I don’t see anyone around me that has screens. Most people have these window gates that kids can sit in.

Growing up, every morning my mother always opened many of the shades, and windows (weather permitting). I do the same. We let in the fresh air and sunlight. And yet I look around at my neighbors, and most of them, their windows/shades are never, ever open. They go straight from heat to A/C.
I'm not talking about ppl who live ground level, right off the street. But upstairs, in the back... nobody could look in, in middle of the day.

Besides for the benefit of saving money on electricity and A/C, an added bonus is, it also makes me think twice before yelling at my kids Wink

I don't open windows because I'm severely allergic to the green environment outside.

I stopped opening front window shades. I open the side and back (you wouldn't
see those). Neighbor across the street was peeping (yes 2nd floor).

and there is a screen behind it and people just slide it up if they want their kids to sit.
I think most homes in Brooklyn have screens, maybe you just never noticed them because you see right through it.

Oh maybe you’re right these must be the older buildings. The newer ones have these vertical windows that you turn to open. Can these have screens as well because I haven’t seen it.

I like shades open but windows closed.

DH loves natural light and will keep all the windows open and all lights off.. drives me nuts. I like natural light mixed with my electricity.

That’s me! When I’m home alone it’s all lights off and all shades up.

My shades are open and some of the windows in the back don’t even have shades. But I only open windows when it’s cool and breezy outside, otherwise the house gets a “sweaty” smell when it’s even a little bit muggy outside. I air it out on those perfect spring and fall days (and occasionally in the winter) but in the summer the windows stay closed.

Screens are definitely an area thing, I don’t know why. It is almost unheard of in London.
In my suburban area in Ny it is also not very common, (I think mainly for aesthetic purposes, people have mansions here). People tend to close windows at dusk when the bugs come out and start looking for lights.
In the Catskills we have lots of screens.

We always open the shades for natural light, but not the actual windows. Some of us get significant seasonal allergies, so yes, we go directly from heat to a/c in the spring.

I wish! DH claims he is allergic to fresh air (year round so don’t try to blame the pollen). I hate it so I just go outside.
