I don't think Mina is uncommon! (My daughter is Mina) I see it all the time.
I don't think it's yiddish either. Spelled with a hey. No specific meaning that I know of though.

While I agree that some names are cruel to give, (regardless of language) but I don't agree with the second part of your comment. Many of us do not look at our "Yiddish Shtetl" pasts as something to be ashamed of and/or erased and hidden. Rather, we are proud of our rich heritage and mesorah and want to honor our ancestors for their mesiras nefesh and holding on to their emunah and yiddishkeit.

My sisters SIL is Zlaty and I know one other. It's so funny how people post x, y, and z is such an uncommon name! And I know a zlaty, 2 or 3 chemdas, 2 odelias, 4 frayda/fradel/fradees...it's very community specific!
Oh, and I'm not in willi or any other chasidish community!

Most of these are really not uncommon names in Brooklyn.

DH went to yeshiva with a very normal guy named Shalom. The first time he got called up for an aliyah, DH found out that his full name is actually a complete passuk:
פלא יועץ אל גיבור אביעד שר שלום

I know a family that has a Bilha and a Zilpa - it's their second name and I think they're called by their first name. Actually twins.

I wouldn't consider Shalom an uncommon name at all. Very common in Chabad after the Rebbe Rashab, Shalom Dov Ber, but also common otherwise.

Shalom isn't uncommon. The full possuk is! It's actually a real name of someone in Tanach.

Im sorry if yes.
I dont find this thread so respectful. |
Someone else listed a name which one of my kids has. It is a name from Tanach and unusual, but we know others.
The point wasn't to disrespect anyone's names, I'm genuinely curious about uncommon names, I am really enjoying hearing the different ones!

Does anyone know a Manoach? As in the father of Shimshon? Always liked that name but never had the guts to use it. Also, Shimshon's mother (who was a bigger tzaddekes than Manoach) was named Hitzlallafonit.
