Hi,
I want to make challah for someone with an egg allergy, what would I use instead of an egg wash? Does anyone have any ideas, I need something bc I want to put toppings on them, otherwise I’m sure I could bake them without the egg wash
Thank you!

You can brush with olive oil. Or just skip the wash.

We've done watered down honey or maple syrup, sugar water or even just plain water

I regularly brush my egg-free challot with concentrated dark brown decaf instant coffee. It gives a nice brown crust, though it is less shiny and rougher than with eggs.

You can brush with oil before and after baking instead of using egg.

I use maple syrup mixed with a bit of water for vegan challah, it’s delicious.
