Ask him directly! That was there won’t be unmet expectations and you will know how much he charges. It’s like asking a store wonder how much a shirt costs. You don’t need to beat around the bush!

Exactly. When we asked he said "the going rate is...." (this was 18 years ago so I'm not surprised to see closer to 1k now)

Ask the mohel, some will say to pay whatever you can afford, some will say people usually spend between x and x, etc.
Personally I did not ask my mohel by either bris I made over the last few years, because we set aside a larger sum specifically to pay the mohel. After all, that is really the bris, and I consider it the most important expense
I actually found out afterwards that the mohel donated a large amount of it to an orginization he knew I have a connection to, which reaffirmed my belief that he was literally the best choice we could have made for who to hire and was such a special person. IYH I can continue to use his services in the future

Thanks. The thing is that the mohel is a close friend of ours and says we don't have to pay him. So I don't know what his usual fee is.

In that case I would give whatever I could afford/feel comfortable paying. Whether its $100, $500, etc.

AFAIK a mohel doesn't actually charge, because it's a Mitzva and one doesn't take $$ for a Mitzva. But it's proper to give in return, how else is he supposed to have parnassa. Hence the "going rate".

If it was Rabbi Heller, he doesn't let anyone pay him, so he's a different story.
