Marriage is like a well worn sweater
Multi hued threads woven intertwined
Each tangle a unique struggle
But a masterpiece when aligned

With proper care it can prevail
Through tumbles and dries of life
It’s quality can shine through
And carry you through hardships and strife

Many think old things are meant to be disposed
They see some worn out corners and holes
While others see familiarity and comfort
And all the stories that it told

Marriage is like a well-worn sweater.

Still new, it was discarded on the clearance rack, ignored for years.
A few people passed it, fingered it, wrinkled up their noses
And walked on past.

I saw it, and stopped.
I could see why they had disdained it
But saw the quality of the workmanship
The intensity of the colors, muted by the dust
The softness of the yarns knitted firmly and strong.

I chose it, paid a pittance for it
Was praised for my tolerance

But once it was washed and paired with an elegant outfit
Once it was worn for a bit
Everyone could see it for what it was
How it only got softer with wear
That the colors just melded more splendidly.

"I wish I had a sweater like that,"
Several have told me, longingly.

Some holes appeared, but were carefully repaired.
Some yarn frayed, but was knit back together.
It maintained its shape through storms and shifts
Kept me warm and secure
Made me feel beautiful and confident
Inspired me to behave like the image I now presented.

Marriage is like a well-worn sweater
That I wear more proudly every day.
