Yes, Meyer Bendet books were written so engrossing and interesting, especially at a time of so few Jewish books.

Who remembers the two volumes of The Orphan?

Also Our Man in Russia. I think that was his first book.

Maybe called dollhouse? I think I know which book you’re talking about but can’t remeber the name for sure

Dollhouse was about a little girl with divorced parents.
The book mentioned us about a girl Gili with a little sister Elisheva, can't remember the title.
Another favorite is The legacy by Miriam luxenberg. I must have read it tens of times growing up

The last 3 our teacher read to us in class

The Little Princess and The Secret Garden are wonderful books, but they are by Frances Hodgeson Burnett, not a Jew.

An old Marcus Lehman book in my parents basement was a favorite. His writing is beautiful, even translated. I still try to obtain every title I can, without breaking the bank.

I know what book you are talking about- I loved it as child. I'm trying to remember the name.
It may have been translated from hebrew I can't remember.
The story definitely took place in Israel. (They lived in Bnei Brak and her grandparents in Yerushalayim)

I remember the front cover had a picture of a little girls hand holding her fathers hand

Someone was a few years ago thinking of reprinting them and translating the ones that were not. Not all of his books were translated from German.

Unfortantly nothing came about that.

There was another one - a boy, BT, on the cusp of getting married gets his family background called into question. Research reveals that in the past, a family member - maybe his aunt? - left the fold and was treated as dead by her family. Everything resolves at a graveside forgiveness scene.

Help with the title?

I read those when I was much too young probably....way before I was a teen.

I almost never remember characters' names from the books I've read, unless there was something very distinctive about the name. I'm amazed when people say something like, the protagonist was a girl named Chana....

Such nice memories, thanks for this thread!

I had the five novelettes by Marcus Lehman and I read them 12 times.

The adopted princess
Butasani
The family Y Aguilar

Can’t remember the others.
One where the husband goes off the derech and abandons his family. Anyone remember?

What a shame they sanitized the stories for todays readers and threw away those they thought don’t “pas” for todays generation.

Wow I loved all his books. If I’m remembering correctly he himself was a Holocaust survivor?

Was waiting for this author! This as well as Mind Games which is still a favorite.

But of course True identity by Mayer Bendet will always be #1 for me Cool
