You're not crazy, but also you can't change the system.
My school had one book (I don't remember which) with words blacked out etc.
But I didn't want to forget it in school so I took it out of the library.
I read the whole book from the library and didn't notice anything wrong... until we read it in the classroom. Then I went back to look what was blacked out.

I'm very frum but I would read the book and leave the word alone. It's good that the kids know a normal meaning of the word . Just like when I say the s^x of the baby... alarm bells don't have to go off.
Our society falls on their hands and knees for extremist both from left and right. I would warn the principal in advance, educate those parents and kindly tell the parents the kids are not looking at the book with dirty minds they will be fine if it's not made a big deal.

Today our very frum library doesn't black things out. If the content of the book is so bad it's not brought in. We teach out kids they may here not so nice words they themselves shouldn't use it. We don't black out the word church and many other anymore, hearing and seeing a
word doesn't mean they are an expert on the entire subject matter.
