Take money dedicated to tzedakah at your destination, carry it with you, and give it when you get there. This way, you are on your way to do a mitzvah while traveling and that keeps bad things from happening to you (I don't remember the exact reason, the mitzvah protects you or bad things stay away to allow the mitzvah to be completed).
