My doctor suggested this.

Has anyone who is not diabetic had experience with this?

It's not especially helpful for weight loss.

I lost weight when I started duloxetine(cymbalta) for anxiety/fybromyalgia.

I’m not sure metformin would work for weight loss. Some people get nauseous from it so the nausea might help with weight loss but there has to be a better way. Maybe ask your pharmacist what he thinks about metformin used for what you need.

One of my friends was being treated through the weight loss clinic run by Dr. Louis Arrone at Cornell and she took it. The accompanying diet was very stringent and eliminated most carbs. I think it required a tremendous amount of willpower. She followed it very carefully and lost a significant amount of weight. However, as soon as she stopped the diet, all the weight came back. I myself have always struggled with weight and I felt so bad for her.

This happens every time I lose weight, it all comes back on again.
That's why I'm asking if anyone's had success with Metformin-I'm scared to be too hopefull....

No. I took metformin for insulin resistance and help getting pregnant and I gained plenty of weight on it.

My GP told me ppl lose 8-10 lbs on it. I just gained. But I have terrible eating habits.

My friend took metformin for weight loss and she did lose.

My Dr also prescribed Metformin for weight loss. I think he felt from all my weight loss attempts and that my sugar level was slightly elevated that perhaps I was insulin resistant and that the Metformin would help me finally lose weight when I would take it while dieting. It did nothing for me. I no longer take it.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I think I'll give it a try, nothing to lose.

Metformin is not a weight loss drug.
Id be weary of a doctof teying to prescribe it for that.
Personally never lost wny weight on it. It just made me sick. I had very bad side effects from it.

Not sure If this was the drug. But there are definitely some drugs that won’t be covered by insurance if they’re prescribed for the wrong diagnosis. If it’s not a weigh loss drug and dr prescribes it for weight loss insurance may not approve it. Just be aware of this possibility

My dr prescribed it for being pre diabetic and hoping I will lose weight too because I’m 20 pounds overweight now

Yes I did lose weight on it. Not a lot, about 15lbs oven 4 months, but it did make it easier then without.

I would be thrilled to lose 15 pounds!
How much did you have to lose before you started?
Were you nauseas?

I didn't have to lose before I started. I had to lose weight because my blood pressure was high, it's weight related so the doctor said I should try and lose weight before going on meds for it. Thought it was pointless to take metformin to avoid BP meds, but he said metformin would hopefully be short term if I manage to keep the weight off. Which I did, 2 years on I've not regained the weight and my BP is stable.

Its a recognised off label use of a drug that is considered safe, with minimal side effects in most people.

My doctor suggested it to me once. I didn't try it, so no personal experience.
