I just bought a wig
NOT LACE - since I don’t feel comfortable wearing a lace for tzniut reasons, and for me it’s too delicate
NOT on sale , regular price
Medium dark brown, longer than shoulder length, but not mid back
European Hair
$1800
I bought it because it suited me and I’m hard to please. It looks fantastic on me, and I felt great in it in less than 3 minutes. If I waited for a sale I might not find one I like. The sale would be $1600, but it would be Sheitels that didn’t sell.

I trust my Sheitel macher. She told me the same quality hair with a lace top, she sells for $3600.
She doesn’t sell lace front with European hair 🤷‍♀️, only regular and lace top.

Just saying m, so you have an idea how much ppl are paying

I just bought a new Irene lace top 24inch for 2350. Where is everyone getting such high numbers? I got it at a sale, but there are sales all the time and diff places. And lace front is usually cheaper. None lace even cheaper sometimes. Also, when I got married, I got 2 wigs, one shabbos and one weekday. I bought a third one at a sale after a year of marriage. Regular Bais Yakov type. My friend who got 3 wigs regretted buying all 3 at once because she didn’t like how heavy it was, and the coloring etc and she only knew after she got married and started wearing it everyday.

Irene is looking to get rid of their dolce inventory lace and non lace. That's why they're on such a massive sale (not saying it's bad, just that they want to get rid of it). There's also not a big range of color and length choices anymore because the sale has been going on for a very long time. The most popular colors and lengths are sold out.
That's why I hate when people throw around these sale numbers, they're not realistic and don't offer a full range of choices. We don't know what color this kallah is.
Everyone is getting these high numbers from wigs bought through regular non sale channels where you have an option of color, length texture and quality.

I find it very funny when people apply their own experience to everyone else out there. "I got a wig for 1000, so everyone's ceiling for spending should now be $1000". "I got an Irene for x dollars, everyone can get the same".

I recently went thru the wedding/sheitel experience for the first time with a very petite DD who happens to have a tiny head. Some of the major, less expensive wig brands don't make her size. When she tried their wigs on, well, think of what it looks like if your very young daughter tries your wig on. Literally, like a Purim costume.

Custom fitting of a wig is expensive, and also unpredictable in terms of results, and we were advised by more than one sheitel macher that we would be better off spending more on a more expensive wig that comes in her size, rather than doctoring a cheaper one.

I've spoken to various friends whose daughters had different needs when it comes to sheitels - color, size, shape, sometimes just isn't a one-size-fits-all.

Plus, as someone pointed out, prices have drastically increased recently, so a decent quality wig can cost quite a bit more than it used to. (yes, for the most part $6000+ wigs are still a more luxury item. I'm talking more like $3-4K, some Kallahs can't get away with cheaper than that if they want something of decent quality that looks somewhat normal on them..... )

Amother Whitewash, I got the Irene Soliel lace top (more expensive and from their new collection) I’m also very fair skinned, got a light brown with blonde highlights. It’s beautiful, I love it. There was a sale at a sheitel macher in the summer, she said she wasn’t making any $ on those wigs. If I paid this price for this wig, you can def get for much less! (The Adore wigs she was offering for a few hundred cheaper but I liked the soliel better) most of my friends got Irene when they got married, most affordable options imo.

This is assuming amother whitewash has a standard head size, Irene-type coloring, etc...

(you should have seen DD in an Irene. They were HUGE).

@Chayalle, the point is to show OP that you can get cheaper options (obviously only if it can work for the kallah) OP shouldn’t think that the cheapest wigs cost 3k++ per wig. You CAN get cheaper very beautiful wigs.

What would you do if this particular Kallah couldn't? She still needs wigs and still needs tzedaka.

I happen to know that TDL in Lakewood will not give a Kallah tzedaka package if the Kallah will buy a wig for over 3K. They have not increased this number even though wig prices have increased. I have heard from people who find this very difficult, and the numbers don't work for everyone.

I’m just totally flabbergasted how tzedaka money could be used for this!

I'm just curious, what should hachnasas kallah money be used for?

I'm blonde, I got married with wigs that weren't my color.
I cried a lot putting those things in my head.

It didn't help that dh didn't think they looked good in me either Sad

My natural hair is beautiful.
It made the mitzvah harder

ETA
I don't think it needs to be across the board to get the most expensive wigs, I do think a kallah should be happy when she looks on the mirror.
Someone I know just got a 6k wig because " a kallah needs one nice wig". It's extremely unnatural. The rooting is terrible, the cut, etc.

I bought a cheap wig and regretted it. The hair wasn't great. I went on to buy a miri and am still really happy with it. But my friend bought an expensive wig and the hair wasn't great on it either. You can't always know.
It's also hard to know before you start wearing one on a daily basis what you will like and how it will feel.
Most people I know start off with 2 wigs. To me saying a kallah needs 3 wigs seems a lot. I would speak to a couple of reliable sheital machers saying the color, length and see what sort of price range they would quote to get a feel of what prices are these days.

The same thing everyone else does when they need something but can’t afford it, either make do with less or only get one quality. The standard for hachnasas kallah should not be more than the average low to middle class family can get. It should be similar.

no one is telling the kallah to wear a tichel. we (mostly ) agree she needs at leas 2 nice wigs. 9k is still over the top.

I got married 5 years ago . upper middle class family. I got a fall for under 1k and a wig for around 2k that I thought was my biggest splurge. I debated getting a 3rd wig. I know prices went up. Thats why I wont comment on exact price.

I will say,It did not occur to me to ge 3 full wigs. This is literally the first time I heard of such a concept

Wow.

I would never pay 9000 for a kallahs sheitels.
I would think a tzedaka would give a something like a 5000 budget at most to be used toeard sheitels. Use it to buy 1 Dini or 2 regular sheitels...

My sheitels are around 1800, and I only have 2.
I don't know people who buy 3 to start out.

So from these conversations. It seems like $6-7000 for wigs would not be called ostentatious.

Wow! I’m saving myself a huge expense by wearing synthetic. I wonder what I’ll do when I marry off my daughter…

No, I think 6-7000 is over the top.

I'm curious why you're asking if it's not your kallah and it doesn't sound like you're the tzedakah org either...

It’s so sad that women can’t just wear cloth - much cheaper, more comfortable and really much more modest than any of these wigs.
No I don’t understand how so much money could go for an item that is really just a beauty and fashion accessory.
That this became the expected norm for kallahs is one of the saddest things in frum society. If women would understand the mitzvah properly they would be happy with synthetic wigs and tichels.

Weren't you banned from discussing kisui rosh by Yael?

I agree, you are not understanding my post.
Let's say we have a Kallah named Chanie. Chanie's family would generally qualify to receive tzedakah assistance for her wedding. But she is looking at wigs, and the ones that suit her are 3200 apiece. She wants to get two wigs at that price (total 6400). She cannot get the whole TDL package (including linen, dishes, etc...) if she plans to spend more than 3000 per wig. She is automatically disqualified.

If she gets a 2 wigs for 2900 apiece, she can get the whole TDL package, and one of those wigs will also have a percent paid for (I'm not sure if it's 100% or some other percent.)

So if we agree she needs two nice wigs - then getting those 2 wigs can have her forfeit the whole package, if she can't stay within the 3K limit.

And not everyone can - whether due to color, size, or the overall price increase in wigs of late.
