It's the worst thing. It's a poverty trap in the UK, a program that pays your rent.
To qualify, you have to earn less than a certain amount and not have more than 6k in the bank.
All the yiddishe girls and boys get married knowing that their rent is covered, healthcare is free, and petty cash comes from the wifes teaching.
So no one goes to work and no one has real money.

I honestly wish I wouldn`t need to rely on Universal Credit and other state benefits but like the poster above said, we are in a poverty trap. Even if both my husband and myself would be working full time, after paying all the bills and the rent/mortgage we would be left with about £20 a month. It`s really hard to make it on your own here, and that is largely due to the way the government has set it up. Unless you come from a family that have money or manage to make a lot of money somehow, you are basically stuck in a rut, and buying your own property in the area is out of the realm of affordability.

I grew up in Stamford Hill and am now on shlichus. (not too far away so I come back pretty often, a few times a year) Of my classmates from LSGS, two still lives in SH, (both not chabad though) another did until recently, the rest are indeed on shlichus or live in Crown Heights or in other chabad communities around the world.

There are some young chabad families still living there but not so many, many more in NW london or (on shlichus) all over London. The chabad school is in Stamford Hill.

Universal Credit is not unique to Stamford Hill, people in other parts of the UK also rely on it too much. I don't live in the UK so not sure how it works exactly.

There is a nice-sized Lubavitch community. They are such nice, friendly people! Universal Credit is a program run all over the UK, totally not only in London.

I didn`t intend for this thread to be a discussion about state benefits! Anyone have any questions about life in Stamford Hill in general?

Because salaries are abysmal and costs are sky-high.

I always say the local heimishe shops only make these ridiculous sky high prices because they know there will always be people paying it. Before yom tov when you would see what goes on in the shops you would think that no one in Stamford Hill is struggling when the opposite is sadly true.

There’s also plenty of charity organisations in Stamford Hill but sadly lots of people that used to be wealthy don’t have the same funds.

Right but most of them are making a lot less money than Americans.
Who care what they do in the USA spend what you have.
6/7 kids living in a 2 bed flat and then wearing designer clothe is bizarre.

I'm mainly talking about spending money on clothe they don't have.
I was in sem with a lot oh SH girls all wearing top of the range clothe.
Whilst they complained they don't have money for essentials.
This is not just the girls after I asked people about it they said there family's are like that.

For real? Im from new York. I visit Stamford hill often for simchos. I'm always amazed at how simple weddings and bar mitzvahs are. I even attended a wedding last year in the Meridian that was supposedly over the top for Stamford hill and it was like a regular standard, budget wedding in Boro park. Same with the way people dress and their houses. I dont know everyone, but the standard of living seems well in check to me.

Even if they wouldn't wear designer clothes, or spending less than they have, they'd still be living in a 2 bed flat. Larger residences are hardly available, and if they are, it's outrageous rent/mortgage.
