Well, I joined instagram mainly to follow a bunch of designers and get ideas for my upcoming renovations and although I haven't personally messaged any of them, I do notice they almost never respond to anyone who asks them a question (I.e. what color paint is that? Where can I get that light fixture? What kind of stone is that counter made of?).
I don't know why these people can't be bothered but it does seem to be the norm. You can stop following them if you want, but it wont likely hurt their feelings -- or even be noticed.

Depends why you’re following them.
If it’s because you like their wardrobe but they’re not linking their stuff or letting you know where you can get it then yes.
But if it’s because you enjoy seeing their content then no. You will lose from unfollowing them not them.
