It's going to be my father's 60th birthday and we're looking for ideas.
We're looking at a budget of about 600. We want it to be a personal gift I.e. for him not for the house.
He is not a picture /album sentimental type at all.
any ideas?

Maybe some type of family tree branching off to all the granchildren. We did that for my grandparents. It's hanging in their dining room w/ such pride.

We got my mum her own recliner chair because she is not really the jewellery type. Your dad might like that or perhaps a new becher?

Well, as the lubavitcher Rebbe said one day, you could "offer" him the learning of a masechta/tractate (well, easier done when you´re a boy, I guess).
You could also come all together, children and grandchildren and brothers and sisters with their kids..., all dressed in your finest, and make a "farbrengen", a nice family meal with his favorite dishes, Torah topics discussed and some dancing for the men.
You could also ask his best friends to join in.
Then add a gift "just for him" ... hum.
A coffee-cup (if he drinks that) with written on it something like:
- Daddy´s the best
- 60 years of love and care that should be doubled
- 60 years... to come! Oif simchas!
A special Torah book he talked about but doesn´t have yet.
Maybe the biography of a Rabbi he admired a lot (Rav Pam / Rav Aharon Kotler / Rav Shimshon Raphael Hirsh / Rav Aryeh levine / The Chafetz Haim / The Lubavitcher Rebbe Rav MM Schneersohn / The Klausenberger Rebbe (The War years - Rebuilding) / The Rebbes of Gur / ...
