How do you differentiate?
When it comes to a simcha and you want to limit your guest list and invite friends, what question can you ask yourself to determine the difference between a friend and an acquaintance?

oh good one.....
I think if I'd be making a simcha 1, I'd first invite fam and then the mamash close friends.
I suppose an aquintanvce is someone you say hi to on the street occasionally and friend is not.

There are different levels of friendship and I am not sure if you can apply this to an invitation list, but I would define as a person in your social circle who when you are in need actually is there and helps, whereas an acquaintance might say sympahtetic things but not really be there for you. I once heard it like this- who would you call on a stormy night if your car broke down and you needed someone to come and get you. ALso, who would you go out to get on a stormy night?

easy - would you be insulted if they missed you off their invitation list?

I find that question very difficult, because I consider almost everyone I've met to be a friend--even if it was only once.

its a really good question, its easy to say what the difference btwn a friend and an acquaintance is but when ur discussing an invitation list, you have to factor in a whole lot more. ppl who expect to be in invited, ppl in ur social circle, coworkers etc, dunno its a tuffie!

an acquaintance is someone you say hello to in the street, and if they moved away you wouldn't keep up with them. A friend is someone you make an effort to stay in touch with, you call, write or go over to each other's houses, and if you moved away you'd still stay in touch.
But there are casual friends, close friends, and friends dearer than sisters.

friend-someone you share your dilemmas with, how your crazy morning went, some exciting things that are happening, some vents...
aquiantence-someone you talk to at work when she passed by, someone you ask if she wants to join you on your lunch break, someone you feel obligated to invite to simchas because she works with you and you see her every day
