those were the days.....
when my 1 and 2 year olds would sleep for 12 hours straight, no matter when we'd put them to bed. if we had a late night and they went to bed 12 am on motzei shabbos - no sweat. we knew they'd sleep till 12 the next day. |
My kids didn't even at that age. It takes them a few days to getting up late (vacation) when going to sleep early, but 1 day for getting up early (school).

When we finished the meal, we would carry them to bed. Friday night was something they looked forward to. |
This is basically what we did. Although we did it primarily as a way to accommodate both small kids and later Shabbos seudas, my kids apparently have very fond memories of it. They are teenagers now, but this is always something they mention whenever they "reminisce" together.

I think throwing off kids schedule even 1 day a week can cause havoc ... however when the kids were little I believe we kept them up for kiddush - they get excited about shabbos and you don't want them to miss out ... now they also napped on shabbos afternoon ...

What I do is make a seuda for the children earlier at regular time to eat. They are all ready for Shabbat and I set their little table with a tablecloth and give them kiddush cups with grape juice. They wash and have lechem mishna with two rolls. Then they have the shabbat meal with all the courses. I let the oldest "mak kiddush" and hamotzei. They love this summertime schedule. If they are not too tired they will stay up later than usual but this makes them feel like they are not missing out when they go to bed.

I think from age 6 or 7 there is the issue of chinuch-kids of chinuch age are obligated to hear kiddush (I am assuming at the right time) and eat the seuda. Before that age you have to know your kids. my oldest dd (5) gets up at 6-6:30am no matter what time she goes to bed, so I try to send her off on time. My middle one likes to sleep late so I will probably start keeping him up soon, since he'll enjoy it.

He wants them to stay up. It is trying cuz everyone is tired and cannot behave. The kids eat an early dinner before shabbat, so by the time kiddush is heard it is bed time. I prefer winter shabbat

Older 2 - ds 8 and dd(7), stay up, we make early Shabbos most of the time in the summer. At one time they used to take a nap on Fri afternoon.
