it is in your best interest to get a real estate agent to represent you. if you intend to do this, do not go to open houses. legally, the agent who shows you a house has to represent you, so if you go to an open house and like the house you are stuck with that agent.
here's a great website:
propertyshark.com
very useful. also, have a definite idea about how much you're willing to spend on a down payment and how much you can afford mortgage-wise. and when you need one, make sure your real estate lawyer is GOOD.

also, be aware of how much closing on a house can cost. closing costs are a deal breaker for some people.

Don't stretch yourself because unexpected costs always arise when you are a homeowner, and they can be a couple of thousand dollars at a time. You are in a perfect position to buy now since you are renter who wants to buy a house in a buyer's market, so go for it!

Imho it is one of the best investments and property in most cases is not going down.
When we first decided on buying we had been married 3yrs why pay rent on a home that is not yours basically flushing it away each month then buy something which will eventually become your own.
I have a relative who purchased home which already had a live in tenant in the basement. If you can buy a home where you can have tennants it could help with a second income.Again look what you can afford, but don't be penny wise and pound foolish it just doesn't pay.

google movers in brooklyn. there are websites which will give your contact info to movers who will email you free quotes.
if you do this, though, do not give your phone number, they''ll call you for three months.

Where in Monsey are you thinking of moving to? Make sure you are familiar with the different areas, and know which part is right for your family.

yes, I'm from monsey. For kid freindly neighboorhoods, wesley hills and new hempstead are your best bet. Forshay is more of an older crowd.

Also, for movers, try Schulgasser brothers.

Estates of Forshay is nice. My parents live in Forshay and it's definitely an older crowd. But on yom tov it's nice because you see tons of strollers and kids in shul from everyone's grandchildren.

make sure there aren't any illegal rennovations and that the house is up to the city code ...
if you don't have that much you can always rent a truck ... otherwise go for the movers ... ditto to the schulgasser bros ...
don't forget a lot of money gets put into any place in the beginning ...

Get a good inspector to minimize those physical surprises...
And plam to add several thousand in the first few years for repairs or changes...no place is perfect or just how you want it. Even taking down a tree can be expensive.
