That works for the first guess. But once I know some of the letters, it's more difficult since I need to plug it into the right place yet find new letters to try too that form a legitimate word. Also, let's assume I know that the letter "I" is the third and it also has an "r" somewhere. I can't first put those letters in the spaces of my choice (like a crossword puzzle) and then work with those letters to see what other letters to insert, since the letters must be placed on the grid in order (no playing around in random order until you're ready to submit your guess). Not sure if I'm explaining myself well.

Use a paper to play around with options. I guess sometimes a random word with no letters I know in it after guess 1 just to find more letters.

I know what you mean. I also don't like that you can't plug it in.
I suppose you can use pen and paper but I usually don't bother.
The fact that the words need to be legitimate is actually a help. In Mastermind, the pegs can be any combination of colors. At least with Wordle you know you are looking for a real word, which helps narrow down possible letter combinations.
