You actually could say tefilas haderech in shul. If you know you'll travel you say it in shema koilanu before ki atah shomeia
Are you sure about this? Never heard of this. Most people know when they are about to travel. We always say Tefilas Haderech on the road, or on the plane as its taking off.

Are you sure about this? Never heard of this. Most people know when they are about to travel. We always say Tefilas Haderech on the road, or on the plane as its taking off.
Sometimes there is a sheila or machlokes if one should or shouldnt say tfilas haderech. So to prevent saying a barcha levatala you can say it in shmoneh esreh
