please do not turn this thread into a political post. I don't want to debate the presidential pardons and commutation.

I simply want to understand what the term means.

I know commutation g a sentence means decreasing the sentence but the person is still guilty of the crime. My question is - does this mean the person gets released from prison? If not, are there rules how long they stay in prison? Are there set rules or is this up to the presidents discretion?

Please stick to the logistics of the question - namely what it means. Thank you
