That it's not allowed lechatchila but sometimes bdieved it becomes allowed.
Chanina thinks in his case it's strong enough to allow bdi eved and the Rav trusts that since Chanina is a talmid chochom he can see that clearly.
What did Chanina's Rav say to him after he asked about surrogacy? I didn't understand the B'dieved and L'Hatchila part.
He said that surrogacy is not allowed Lechatchila. Meaning, in normal circumstances, it's not allowed. (I actually don't understand why not, halachically. Isn't a man allowed to have more than one wife?) However, because the choice is literally Ruchami determined to find someone to remove the IUD and risking her life to have a baby, or surrogacy, the choice becomes a B'dieved. It's to save her life.
Yes, such a romantic soul - at Gitti's expense
And I'll never forgive him for the baby naming deceit that he pulled on her.
Two horrific betrayals.
Gitti has good reason to be pragmatic about her son's shidduch and to seek someone 'safe' for him.
While I think that Lipa's infidelity is unforgivable, let's not pretend that it happend because he is a romantic soul.
It happened because he was depressed and extremely frustrated, and he felt forced to leave his family for months in order to make a bit of money. It seems like he snapped and lost himself. Not that it's an excuse. But he didnt go Chasing girls because he was romantic. It was an act of rebellion because he felt broken.
As far as the baby naming goes, it was horrible for Gitty. But the producers portrayed it so realistically that it was possible to sympathize with Lipa's position. He felt trapped between his wife (who seemed to stand on ceremony because of an emotional objection) and what he believed to be his ticket to possible financial freedom. His was a pragmatic decision, that he hoped his wife would come around to agreeing with. By the time he realized that she wouldn't come around, he felt it was too late since he already invested the money.
I don't think she'll be a love interest for Akiva. Remember that other artist woman they had him hanging out with in a studio? The one who taught him to push away pain?
If they do end up together, it's just way too shmaltzy. I liked it that in previous seasons, just because a new girl showed up didn't mean Akiva fell in love with her instantly.
I also think that Akiva acted horribly to her. That was mean what he said. He knew what she meant. That poor girl deserves way better than a mean widower.
.
I also thought she was going to be a new love interest for Akiva. Otherwise why would they make the buyer a young pretty woman?
It may be a red herring but they definitely want us to think it's going in that direction. You can see that in the last scene, Akiva is doodling and the picture is a profile of Rachelli.
Akiva was disgusting to her. She did not deserve to be shamed like that. Rachelli was perfectly in her rights to insist that these paintings didn't measure up. BUT, The problem could have been avoided if he would have discussed with her what type of art she would like. He couldn't have seriously thought that the new pieces were as good. They were smaller in size and impersonal. They lacked the emotion that the pictures of his wife had.
When he said "Now I know why my daughter cried when she saw you" and "now I know why you are alone" it felt out of character for Akiva. He has always been a mensch, and a conciliatory kind of guy. A people pleaser. Remember, he was the one who got engaged to Esti because he couldn't hurt her feelings. And he was exasperated with his father's rudeness towards that woman on the train who wanted to kiss the sefer Torah on their way up to Nahariya.
So having him lash out like that felt fake. But maybe he can be excused because he is in the dumps and depressed...and he had worked for hours to try to get the paintings back and his efforts were rejected.
Akiva aside, what’s this thing With Shulem Chasing after freshly widowed women? The way he eyed her AT THE LEVAYA was super creepy. He’s done it before, at someone’s shiva. It’s as if as soon There’s a tragedy, his first thought is ooh goodie, maybe I can grab the wife for myself, now. And he has zero self-awareness of who might be a good fit for him. Girls half his age, more modern women, frum rebbetzins. As long as they’re single and female, they’re fair game. I hate that they portray him like that. It doesn’t seem to fit the rest of his character.

He is a real character. He has a weakness for women. But in all honesty, he is probably just lonely. It was pathetic to see him ironing his own shirt. Even Ruchami understood his hints when he was drooling over her "simple " supper for her husband and offered to bring him dinner. A man like that needs a wife to take care of him and to be a companion.
But I agree that he lacks self awareness. Especially since Nechama is still deep in mourning over YIssachar.
But this is one of those things that doesnt ring true. A widower like Shulem in this community would usually approach a shadchan. Its unbecoming to spring himself on an unsuspecting woman and offer himself for marriage. This is precisely why we have matchmakers. But then it wouldn't be so funny. That scene was almost identical to the other one where he proposes marriage to that 30-something year old woman from Nahariya.
Anyone else noticed that Jewish themed baby book in the baby's crib ? That was epic. The nuances are spot on.
I thought that the scene with Chanina and the Rosh Yeshica was fantastic. So emotional. Chanina is an incredible actor. So authentic. You can really feel his acute discomfort in his question and his pain when talking about his wife's pain. I also love the way he says "roshiva" as if it's the most natural thing to say. As if he was born a yeshiva bachur.
Can anyone explain to me why Nechama Yukton was sitting in what appears to be a recording studio when Shulem called her? It seemed so strange. You could see the technician in the background.
My friend in Israel unexpectedly walked by a live recording of shtisel this summer and managed to get a video of a scene before the director shooed them away.... are those types of spoilers allowed?

Akiva is in such deep emotional pain.
His wife who was finally the love of his life dropped dead.
I'm not sure why he let Kaufman have the paintings in the first place if he knew he wanted to keep them.
Akiva has always tried to take the easy way out. He's not exactly driven in any aspect of his life except painting.
I'm not surprised that he offered Rachelli inferior work.
Shulem has been lonely and hungry since season 1. Remember when he used to have dinner and flirting sessions with his secretary. Smart strong lady, she married someone else when she saw she wouldn't get anywhere with Shulem.
I think he saw Nechama as sug bet bcz she was engaged to the "mizrachi who sold lotto tickets" so probably figured he wouldn't embarrass himself by going through a shadchan.

He let Kaufman have the paintings because in his daydreams of his wife, he heard her urging him to sell the paintings so he could pay the rent. For Libby, as much as she was able to support her artist husband, she was always the more practical one. Remember in season 2, she was wary of marrying a man who made art his life. In her view, Art is an important part of Akiva, but it shouldn't take over every thing else. She even tells him the night they got married that life is short and he shouldn't squander the time only painting. Akiva essentially countered that painting IS life.
So he was hearing her voice talking him to be practical and sell them, so he finally gives in.
But after they are sold, he is tormented by the decision and has nightmares about losing Libby. So he goes back to Kaufman to try to cancel the sale.
About Shulem, it was kind of interesting how insulted he got when Nechama turned him down. He leaves the restaurant in a huff, only to meet up with Weinbach and his cronies, who threatened him with a din Torah. He is still smarting from Nechama's rejection, and this triggers him to stand up for his dignity in the face of Weinbach's threat. He is not a "Mirzachnik who sits in a booth selling lottery tickets!." How dare they talk down to him... and interestingly, this worked. In the previous episode, they spoke very disrespectfully to him. But now he fought back, and they backed off.
Amother Coffee already explained it before.
Basically, lechatchila means "ideally". Like in an ideal situation , or the most preferred situation.
B'dieved means secondary, or the less preffered situation. These two terms are used in halacha alot.
For example, let's say a woman goes into labor on shabbos, ideally, she should have a non jewish driver take her to the hospital. But believed, if that isn't practical or whatever, a jew can drive her. (This shouldn't be taken as practical halacha, I'm just saying it for illustrative purposes). Sometimes we go the bedieved route if it's a dire need or there will be a big fallout by following the lechatchila.
So the Rosh Yeshiva was saying, it's not ideal to allow for surrogacy in halacha. It's not a preferred option. But b'dieved, there are poskim who are lenient and allow it, in cases of dire need. So I'm not sure if you are in a position of lechatchila, or bedieved. So Chanina answers that he is definitely in a bedieved situation.

THE FOLLOWING SPOILER IS FROM A FUTURE EPISODE, NOT YET RELEASED
Hidden:
I had a video clip my friend filmed while walking in Israel when they bumped into a live shtisel recording. It has akiva and Racheli walking together, pushing devorahla in a carriage and lovingly smiling at each other and racheli is obviously wearing a sheitel
