Dried peas. Chopped onion. Chopped carrot. Salt. Water. Sometimes lentils. Maybe garlic. Quantities variable and depending on supplies.
It doesn't need more than that. I normally put everything in the crockpot the evening before when I know I am going to have a long day at work and a cold tired bus ride home. I switch it on before leaving for work in the morning, and come home to a hot filling supper waiting for me as soon as I have taken my coat off.

Split peas
Chopped onion
Chopped or sliced carrots
Salt
A bay leaf
You could also add:
Crushed garlic
A handful of barley
White wine
Fun spices from your stash
Onion soup mix in place of, or in addition to the salt
Usually the package says how much water. Usually it’s a 2:1 ratio. I think it cooks an hour.

I liked this version from the Moosewood cookbook
(I found it online here, seems like it's the same as the one in the book:
https://www.familycookbookproj......html )
Ingredients:
3 c. dry split peas
7 c. of water (more as needed)
1 bay leaf
2 tsp. salt
½ to 1 tsp. dry mustard
2 c. minced onion
4 to 5 medium carrots, sliced or diced
1 small potato, thinly sliced
Lots of freshly ground black pepper
3 to 4 Tbs. red wine vinegar
Toppings: sesame oil (optional), diced tomato, parsley
Directions:
1) Place split peas, bay leaf, salt and dry mustard in a kettle. Bring to a boil, lower heat as much as possible, and simmer partially covered for about 20 minutes.
2) Add onion, garlic, celery, carrots, and potato. Partially cover and leave it to simmer gently for about 40 more minutes w/occasional stirring. If necessary, add some water.
3) Add black pepper and vinegar to taste. Serve topped with a drizzle of sesame oil, diced tomato and minced parsley

Simmer on low for a few hours
Low & slow, kind of like meat

If they're really old they won't break up, however long you simmer them. A stick blender helps in these cases.

thanks. I have no idea how old they are. I bought it from the grocery last week.
I have other vegetables in the soup so I don't want to use a stick blender.
any other ideas?

I recently found that if I cook my split peas without spices or veggies they split much nicer.
When I boil with spices they never split.
My basic recipe
Sauté lots of onion and garlic in bit of oil
Add rinsed split peas. Cover with water plus extra. Simmer 2+ hours.
Add lots of diced veggies - carrots, celery, zucchini, potato, sweet potato, parsnip...
Spices - salt, pepper
A drop sugar
1 T tomato paste or more
Boil until cooked
The recipe in the by cookbook 1 is very good
