My agenda is to accurately state that this virus actually poses very small risks to the population, particularly the healthy population.
As opposed to the media who is sensationalizing it and pretending the danger is far greater than it actually is so that people will watch.

Are you the same OP promoting sending all the elderly into quarantine?

The stores here are out of hand sanitizer which shouldn't kill anyone but if stores can't keep a simple product like that in stock and clinics are running out of masks, what does it say about society's ability to render aid to numerous stricken people?
The CDC here has also made some blunders and currently, only health departments are testing for the virus. Local urgent care centers don't have the tests so people can spread the infection because they are unaware that they have it.
Obviously we were frightened of the measles outbreak because measles is potentially hazardous but Corona virus now has a proven track record for killing people. |
What exactly do you mean that "coronavirus has a proven track record of killing people"? Are you we worried about babies drowning in bathtubs? Choking on food? Getting hit by a car? All these also have a "proven track record of killing people". You're not concerned for 1 reason. The statistics are very low. Guess what? The death rate for coronavirus is also very low. Why don't you look at the statistics of how many people are dying, both in countries that are being diligent and not doing anything to control the situation?

Do you want to share links to the media sources that we should trust for accurate information?
Or should we just stand by on imamother for your informative updates?

Of course we take precautions! Do you leave your baby unattended in a bathtub? Do you use carseats? Do you smoke? Do you leave your medicines and cleaning supplies lying around? Taking reasonable precautions against one threat is no stira to taking reasonable precautions against another threat.
You don't need to be panicked. You just need to follow some basic guidelines. And if your community is quarantined or travel plans cancelled, well, that's what it's gonna be.

Not sure it's only the media. Lots of people have health issues that could result in death from Corona virus. There are no vaccines or treatments. But maybe we should just let nature take it's course and forget about quarantine and hand sanitizer.

We don't throw caution to the wind. We also have ways to avoid these tragedies.

I think the media is making it seem LESS dangerous than it really is. I read from a reporter, that reporters are very careful in how they relay the news to keep everyone as calm as possible as opposed to other times when they make news look worse than it is to bring up the hype.

Not to mention that all the panic buying is not being pushed by the media or actual experts.

So far Italy has a 4% fatality rate. Seems under inflated.

amother [ OP ] wrote: | Fair enough. In Iran where they aren't doing anything to contain, they have a population of 85 million. There have been 194 deaths reported. Will it get to 1000? Perhaps, but you don't think this "crisis" is getting way more attention than it deserves? There were 51 deaths last year in the U.S. from lightning strikes out of a population of 300 million. If the death rate in Iran ends up at 1000, that'll mean that a person is 13 times more likely to die from a lightning strike in the U.S., than from the Coronavirus in Iran. |
Every single part of this is wrong.
There were 20 deaths from lightning strikes in the US last year.
Death by lightning strike is non-random, and the average person's risk is way less than 20 out of 300,000,000.
There is absolutely no reason to assume that if coronavirus was allowed to run rampant in Iran, the total death toll would be 1,000. They've had 194 fatalities in under three weeks. 49 in the past 24 hours alone. 1,000 is a wildly optimistic estimate; if the death toll is that low it will be because either a cure/vaccine was found, or the Iranian government took dramatic steps to slow down the spread, or both.
And even if we use your numbers, the math is wrong. 51/300,000,000 is obviously a much smaller number than 194/85,000,000 (eta: let alone than 1,000/85,000,000...). You don't even need to do the math, just look at the numbers. The numerator of the second is 4x bigger and the denominator is more than 3x smaller.
Quote: | How many people do you know who've died from getting struck by lightning? And again, almost certainly most Coronavirus fatalities involve those who are compromised immune systems. |
Oh, well in that case. Screw those people
... is there not a single person you can think of who's sick, or over the age of 50, who'd you'd rather see alive? Come on.
Never mind that coronavirus is still more fatal to young people than every other cause of death combined (in the western world). The most optimistic estimate to date is a 0.2% fatality rate among people ages 10-20. In most Western countries the current total death rate among people that age is 0.2%, for lightning strikes, car crashes, cancer, gang shootings, etc, all together.
Quote: | Btw, while we can't necessarily trust the numbers in China, it's being reported that they have reopened many local stores such as Starbucks and IKEA. It would be hard to lie about such facts and if true would clearly demonstrate that things have vastly improved. |
China takes extreme, draconian measures to stop the spread of the virus -> the situation improves
-> clearly there was nothing to worry about!!!
/sarcasm

I am not personally concerned for myself and immediate family as we are young and healthy. However, there are thousands of people who very much have reason to be concerned-elderly, cancer patients, anyone with a weakened immune system.
It is mine and your duty to ensure we are taking measures not to spread the virus even if we’re not concerned for ourselves because there are thousands who are in danger. I have a close family member who the common flu can be deadly for. For her, the coronavirus is extremely dangerous. There are also those among us who you don’t necessarily know are immune compromised because they don’t publicize their personal health issues.
So yes, purim comes at a dangerous time of year now for elderly and others who are at risk.
So even if you’re in great health, be a responsible human being and care about others than yourself and wash your hands, refrain from parties with large groups of people and don’t shake hands or hug people this year. Everyone will have to understand that it’s not a personal thing, it’s a safety thing

Forgive me for being jaded, but I've heard one too many doomsday predictions to take anything seriously anymore.
Who remembers Sars, Ebola and anthrax?
Who remembers Y2k? People really thought the world was coming to an end.
I live in Miami Beach. 30 years ago, people were saying that in 10 years, the city will be underground. They are still saying it, and at the same time, buildings keep going up. (Hint: the city is still above ground, and is showing no indication of sinking.)
I've lived through the most horrific hurricane predictions, the most recent one causing 95% of Miami to leave. They said Miami would not exist after the hurricane. It turned out to be basically nothing. We are still here. The thing is, that for days beforehand the media was talking about it non-stop. People really suffered, not from the hurricane, but from the anxiety, traveling, fighting etc that was brought upon them thanks to the media hyping up the story.
This is true in the political arena as well. In 2016, the left-wing media were all predicting doom and gloom if Trump were to be elected. World wars and Nazism would return. We would all be in camps, or worse, dead. We are 3.5 years in and I think we can all agree that that didnt happen. I remember hearing the much of the same 8 years earlier regarding Obama. Somehow there will always be people predicting the end of the world as we know it.
There are people today who are saying that we are quickly running out of food to sustain the human population, so we should all stop bringing babies into the world. There's even a professor in some college teaching students that we should be EATING babies. (I kid you not. This is a real thing.) The thing to notice is the desperation these activists have when talking about their version of what's to come. They are really and truly panicked.
My point is that people run into "end of the world" mode very easily. They get angry at people on the opposite end who scoff at these predictions. They are consumed with anxiety and run themselves ragged to save themselves.
I don't know who is right. You can argue that those who saw the writing on the wall in pre-Nazi Germany were the ones who escaped in time. You can point to the Black Plague that claimed 1/3 of Europe before the crisis was over.
But as for me, after having lived through too many doomsday scenarios, forgive me for taking all this with a large grain of salt.
Wash up with soap and don't sneeze at people. Stay home if you are sick. But the constant obsessing? I'm too busy for that. Purim is coming.

They aren't even testing people already in ICU unless they can prove contact. The numbers are useless.
