At the moment - with a death rate of about 3.4%, it's 30 times deadlier than the flu and much more contagious.

1/5 people with Covid end up in hospital. In Italy 1/10 who tested positive are in ICU. That is way worse than the flu and the system just cannot handle 10% of the population in the ICU

Wash your hands well, use plenty hand gel when out. Cough and sneeze in your elbow and avoid standing too close to others. Don't touch public surfaces too much, WASH. YOUR. HANDS.
Just like you protect yourself from flu without freaking out, do the same. Take precautions.
FWIW I heard from several people that it has been around for a while but they only just started testing for it. I bet if they go to a random person in Texas that hasn't traveled or whatever, he may test positive because it is not a NEW virus it is just NEWLY DISCOVERED. |
Nope.
You're right that "corona virus" has been around since the dawn of time. The common cold is a form of coronavirus. It's called that because the virus itself is shaped like a crown (hence "corona").
Remember SARS? MERS? Allll corona viri.
But COVID-19, this specific type of corona virus, is a total novelty.

Just want to point out that Swine Flu and Bird Flu are not coronaviruses.

Apparently some televangelists were selling fake Corona virus cures and were told to stop. I wonder how many snake oil salesmen are going to profit from this.

I research covid from end of January and I am scared all this time.
I recommend doctor John Campbell and MedCram channels on YouTube, they make perfect explanations of all the medical knowledge about covid. Yes, it is very scary thing for many people (20% of us), very dangerous for medics and nurses and has potential overload hospitals and medical systems and economics. Israel and Korea are examples how to deal with it . China is also, not in the beginning but now.
And I am worried about Jewish communities- Shabbat shuls, Purim parties, public meggilah reading , Pesach Seder. And even miniyan Davening is dangerous at times like this . Kissing the mezuza.
I don’t know how can we solve this problem. I wonder what Jews did in times of the medieval Plagues

While it’s true that most people who have it get better, we still have to take precautions because of how quickly it travels. The Spanish flu of 1918 also only had a 2.5 fatality rate, and yet it killed 50 million people worldwide. When looking at it on an individual level, I’d say chill. But we live in a society as a whole and from a wider perspective we do need to make sure it doesn’t spread more. We have to help protect the weakest members.

I often see this and don't understand. What do you mean "trust" in hashem with regard to the coronavirus?
A. Trust that hashem won't allow the coronavirus to affect us jews. This seems silly as hashem allows bad things to happen all the time. Why would I trust that hashem wouldn't send the virus to us?
B. Trust that if we get sick from the coronavirus, we should believe that it's for our own best interest. We just don't understand how feeling sick or dying is good for us, but it is.
C. Other. Please explain.

The measures that Israel is taking regarding quarantine are very smart. In the spread of this lies the danger, as we can see from the man in Westchester, etc.....
Our communities are more at risk, I think due to shul, large gatherings, mikva, etc. Be careful, use sense, and good hygiene.

Unless 100% of the population is tested, this number is an exaggeration. Only those that are symptomatic are going to get tested, and of course - those who are sick enough to seek out a test are more likely to be sick enough to end up hospitalized.

Trust in Hashem that you will be healthy. Follow any specific directives given by the health department, and leave the worrying to Hashem.

If you want some pretty reliable statistics, look at South Korea. They are testing a significant portion of the population. Keep in mind that South Koreans, however, are much healthier than Americans. However, it is still worth look at what they have because their testing is vast and is covering asymptomatic and mild individuals because of their testing stations, etc.

I'm sorry if I'm getting off topic a little, but I often see this idea of "trusting" in hashem when we are worried about something.
You say we should trust in hashem that we will all be healthy and that the coronavirus will pass over us in the same way the Makkas Bechoros passed over the jews and only targeted the Mitzriyam in Egypt. Hashem also gave us seichel and common sense. It's pretty obvious that hashem runs the world in a way where we would be silly to think we will be protected while others around us are getting sick. Jews suffer from the same illnesses and tzoros that everyone else around them suffers from. It would be foolish to have emunah that the coronavirus will not affect the jewish population.
