Where do you live?
I hear in the usa there's a place called halfprice or something like that books.
I think Dover books are the greatest. You can order many books for as little as a 1.00, but of course there is a shipping fee for less than $50. If your orders total over $50 and are sent to one place in the USA, shipping is free.
Take a look here (and no I don't have any stake in the company, I just really love their stuff)

I use http://www.bookins.com you enter all the ISBN numbers of whatever you have in the house. If someone want sit, you get an email with a link to a ready-to-print label. Drop it in the mailbox the same day. You earn points and then you get a book that YOU requested, free. It’s so cool.
But for books that I need NOW, I go to amazon.com and buy them used, it always arrives fast and looks fabulous and I never spend more than $6 or so.

old stores. in chicago, there are lots of thrift stores. most books are .25. on Mondays, when everything is half price, these books are .12.
The selection is determined by your mazel, but I've found popular books like those by Kinsella, kellerman, etc; all the chicken soup books, cook books, word puzzle books, I've found some english artscrolls and lots of kid fiction (that I would let in my house).
the children's books are plentiful. If you just want any good books, and know them when you see them and aren't looking for specifics, go to old stores.
