He just likes their size , and their energy, and their big, broad faces, and funny barrel chests, and their happy dogginess. We'll be looking in Israel's shelters, so it's unlikely we'd find an actual Pitbull, but let's face it: any dog who looks like that out here is going to have some bulldog/mastiff blood, and it will probably be at least partially a Pitbull, mandatory neutering laws aside.

So now I'm thinking this over, and trying to sort out facts from prejudice, before we even start down that road.

What about part English Bull dog?

You have to remember that a golden retriever is not the same breed as a pit bull. If you adopt a golden retriever when it is young, and give it lots of love and attention, it will be a playful and loyal companion. A golden retriever will not bite unless provoked. Even so, it is very rare for someone to get bitten by a golden retriever.

A pit bull is a different breed. Even if you raise a pit bull to be loyal and friendly, it can turn on a dime. No matter how much love you give it, you will never know when it can turn around and bite you and your children. Your husband isn't safe either.

I used to live in an apartment building with a pit bull. The owner kept it on a leash of course. One day a neighbor with a small dog passed out in front of the building. The pit bull escaped the leash and ran over and bit the small dog. Such is the inherent nature of pit bulls but not of golden retrievers.

My coworker has pitbulls and has always been a staunch defender of them . "Theyre misunderstood, they rarely attack, theyre incredibly loyal etc etc etc"

Then one day another coworker of mine let everyone know to be extra nice to Susan (this coworker), because they she had to put down their beloved pitbull of 6 years, who they raised since she was a puppy, because all of a sudden one day she just snapped and tried to kill the husband (who is 6"2 and humongous). It required 2 other adults to get the dog off.

Crazy thing is, the husband was this dog's absolute favorite human in the whole world. They were inseperable. But for whatever reason she decided to attack him and he nearly died.

OP, why dont you go for something like english bulldog?

(Anon because ive said this story in real life)

This can happen with any animal, it happened with my friend's cat. Yes, really.

Please just no... I would never come over to your house and never let my kids come over no matter how nice you are. This is a really bad idea Hiding

American Pit Bull Terriers or American Staffordshire Terriers are uniquely tenacious among dog breeds. Whatever you've trained them to do, they'll do it with their dying breath.

If they've been trained or allowed to become aggressive, then they are the fiercest dogs out there. As someone else noted, they simply will not let go.

However, that same quality makes them one of the most desired breeds for hospice and therapy dogs. A pit bull who's been trained to comfort a patient will completely ignore lights, sounds, and even a medical emergency going on around him -- and focus on the patient.

In fact, at one time, pit bull terriers were known as "nanny dogs" because they could be trusted to watch children and retrieve or herd them away from potential dangers.

An amazing article about pit bulls and criminal profiling is this famous piece by Malcolm Gladwell: Troublemakers.

All that said, training and maintaining a dog like a pit bull is a huge undertaking. They require very firm, consistent training, and many people will find them frightening.

As you know, I am a total cat person.

But even I will admit that if cats had opposable thumbs, we'd all be goners. Very Happy

long term dog owner here, my parents grew up with them, we grew up with them, my kids grew up with them.

please if you are getting a dog only get a breed that is bred to be a docile family dog over generations upon generations the type that would NEVER bite someone or react even if and when provoked by a small child who doesn't know any better and like pulls its tail.

if you want a big dog labrador retrievers and golden retrievers are amazing family dogs bred for generations to be kind and non reactive to provocations

please do not under any circumstances agree to get a pit bull. seriously.

if you must get a look a like yes I have known people who were happy with boxers though I have no experience with them.

do not get dobermans ever either for similar reasons, like pit bulls these dogs are bred over generations to be fighters, killers, guard dogs, and have different teeth and jaw structure as others have pointed out

terrible liability to your family and anyone around you -- this idea gives me serious shivers -- our dogs all steered clear of pit bulls and the like even when at dog beaches and dog parks and leashed walks. And yes I have heard all the owners protests....

I have gotten bit by a stray dog and B"H it was not one of these with the terrible teeth and jaws -- big difference and bad enough as it was.

A cat does not compare with a pitbull. It is unlikely for a cat to be able to kill someone. A pitbull is a capable killer, so if it decides to turn on you, you can actually die. If your cat decides to turn on you, you get badly scratched.

Thanks for the clarification I thought you meant a pit bull killed a cat!
Which unfortunately is quite believable.

So now I'm thinking this over, and trying to sort out facts from prejudice, before we even start down that road.

When I was a kid we went to the JSPCA to choose a dog. An ugly matted thing kept running out to us, despite us trying to look at other options. At one point she ran right out the gate then sat waiting next to our car. We decided she must have chosen us, so we took her home.
Turns out she was a gorgeous [mostly] Australian sheep dog. She had tons of energy and loved to run outside, but was also the most gentle thing in the world. Incredibly playful but would never for real bite anyone, even kids.
The moral of the story is A: don't spend money on fancy bred dogs when there are so many out there already desperate for your love, and B: don't decide what the dog will be like before you discover their personality. You might find what turns out to be a surly pit bull who hates running...or a friendly sheep dog that is a runner by nature. Choose an dog based on their personality more than their breed. Which also goes to reinforce point A, I guess.

If DH wants a jogging buddy get a lab. A bench lab is more "square looking". Very handsome.

If he likes the looks of a pitfall get him a stuffed animal of one.

Golden retriever bites are NOT rare (and I say this as someone who has owned one and would again). By sheer dint of numbers (it's one of the top breeds) there are plenty of bites from Goldens.

Pit bulls can go either way. I know some super sweet pits. I would not, however, adopt an unknown pit bull from a shelter, especially an adult, because you don't know how it's been raised and trained. Where I live there's a backyard breeder problem. And it's definitely a breed that requires an owner who is really willing to work with the dog.

(training is so important--even the sweetest breed can be a poorly behaved pain in the whatsit if you don't invest your time in that. And some dogs are just more work, for whatever reason. I know people who keep border collies. Smartest dogs. But if they aren't actively trained and don't have work to do, they will destroy your house.)
