Here's a thread I wanted to start for a while with interesting podcasts episodes that I've heard.

Here is a Freakonomics episode about how our political system is failing us by creating a duopoly and forcing us to choose between two companies/organizations/parties that only care about enriching themselves and not about providing value to the people they serve. This also explores steps that would help us change the system.

Here is a super interesting This American Life episode about a girl kidnapped in America and forced to live with a fundamentalist family in Pakistan and how the book Little Women helped her through.

The episode overall looks at words and prayers, including kaddish.

Here's a Radiolab episode about forced sterilization in America today. So interesting! Also this was part of a very interesting series on the history of IQ.

Thank you! Always looking for specific recommendations. I enjoyed several episodes of Hidden Brain. Freakonomics is also a favorite of mine.

I heard about this one from Rachel Tuchman, a therapist, on Instagram. It's hard to listen to in many places but I felt like it was a very important listen as a mother of a girl. It's about how a sports doctor got away with s-xually abusing hundreds of girls for years and years, sometimes even while their parents were in the room.

Here is an interesting one from Dear Sugars about consent. At first I found it a bit annoying and over the top, but here an idea they said that made me really think: Women in our society are expected to be passive and resistant to 5ex and, men, therefore, are encouraged to be assertive and even aggressive and that's a big part of how rape culture works. If we encourage women to be enthusiastic and active participants and teach men that anything less than that means NO, we will change the culture. In other words, women who are playing hard to get or being coy or whatever, those women should be refused 5ex categorically. 5ex should only take place if both parties are not just consenting, but active and enthusiastic participants. I found this to be an interesting and provocative concept.

I can't listen to this, due to my filter. But I would really like to know what she said. Could you summarize please?

it was about Larry Nassar, a famous physician for the USA Gymnastics team. Under the guise of pelvic floor therapy, he assaulted many gymnasts for decades.

I remember from the podcast that the mother's chair would be at an angle where she could not see exactly what he was doing with his hands. And he would just pretend this was pelvic floor therapy. Because he was so well trusted and even loved, many people never even questioned why a girl would need pelvic floor therapy for a neck injury, for example.

I remember when listening to it that I kept thinking about how much trust people give authority figures, trust that is sometimes not warranted at all.
