My birthday is coming up. What I really would love to do is have my kids ages 12-16 spend time with me in a way that they’ll enjoy without spending much.. Any ideas? Thanx.

Depends how much you'll spend...
Pizza?
Bowling?
Painting pottery?
I'm sure more ladies will have more ideas...

I don't know how the weather is where you are, but one of my best birthdays was one where we took a picnic to a beautiful botanical garden. It's over 15 years ago and I still remember it as having been very special.

Bowling, a hike or bike ride, movie if you do that, art workshop like pottery painting, laser quest, paintball, boat ride, picnic in the park, ice cream.
Oops, I reread and see you said not expensive, but I'll leave those suggestions, I don't know how much things cost in your location.

Ceramic painting. You can even do real dishes etc. My teen boys enjoy it.

Look for groupons in your area. My kids enjoyed glass fusion.
