Rabbi Nachum of Chernobil became fat by saying "amein" and "y'hei sh'mei raba". How is it possible to get fat that way? Rabbi Nachum apparently derived much pleasure by answering brochas but did he also eat something?

Where is this written? Sometimes the word "fat" means, "became wealthy" or something like it. Maybe it means that he amassed a lot of s'char (I.e. riches) by saying "amein" and "y'hei shmei rabah" Don't take my word for it, though, because I've never heard of this in my life.

My father writes in one of his maamarim: Fatness of the body can result from the spiritual pleasure and delight derived from G-dliness. They say of R. Nachum of Chernobil that he became corpulent from answering amein y'hei sh'mei raba.

The point isn't whether fat is a good thing or a bad thing; it's to show the greatness of a Tzaddik who got so much pleasure out of saying 'amein yehei shmei raba'.

ah, now I understand where all those alte yiddenes who used to tell me back when I was a very giggly little girl "don't laugh so much, laughing makes you fat" got it from.
