anyone know of a online site that would give me patterns for making my own stars . I don't want to buy a expensive kit.

The patterns are usually handmade/hand-drawn. Some people are very creative and come up with new designs each year. The ones in the link from Amazon seem to be from one specific "brand" called Sukkah Star.

My (adult) son has made Sukkah stars using origami paper, and not from a kit. They're like the stars in this how-to YouTube video (in Hebrew):

sukkah stars were a thing long before the kits came out. the kits just simplified the process. I don't know how to make a star but the process is similar to making a paper snowflake and then layering it with the same pattern in concentric snowflakes.
