I put a chicken in the fridge to defrost last Thursday and never got around to preparing it. Can I make it tonight? Is it still safe to eat?

Someone ought to invent an alarm that goes off on defrosted poultry/fish to remind you when it has to be cooked. It feels so bad to have to throw something out, and worse if it makes you sick if you eat it.

remember it must have sat for a while in the store, also. you can't leave it more than a day or 2.

Actually, I disagree with all of you...

I spoke to a butcher about this just last week because I too had ground chicken in the fridge for a week (from when I bought it). I called the butcher and he told me that they get meat in every day and that as a general rule 10 days is the "number". He said that if it was in the fridge the whole time and since its ground and is not with the bones then it is okay. He said that in a regular grocery store (think shoprite) they give it 3 weeks before the expiration date. Anyway, I used my chicken after it sat in the fridge for a week and it was fine - nobody got sick or anything.

People are WAY to quick to throw food out these days...

Fresh chicken can last longer than frozen and then defrosted chicken. You can't compare the two.

I don't know if the smell test is 100%; of course if it smells bad it must be bad . . but food can smell okay and still have bad germs in them. salmonella, etc.

And then when you cook them, the germs die.

Well if it smells ok, I would heat it up past boiling, which WOULD kill any bacteria. I'd throw out leftover shabbos food if it smelled off- not by the date.
