Coke Roast recipe needed

What is the best recipe for a roast using Coke or another soda? How do you cook it? (stovetop or oven, how long, at what temp?)

I'm using a kalichle, if that makes any difference. I hope it's a nice cut, it was recommended to me by a lot of ppl.

That sounds like the one, I'll look through the archives to see if I can find it.

I'm also looking for ways to cook the kalichle as a roast, I.e. bake in oven low and slow, or on the stovetop?

I thought the kalichle was going to be more roast-like, but I got it delivered earlier and it looks more like big chunks of soft stew meat to me.

It gets me so nervous when I see you parents writing about cooking with coke and soup mixes. I am not a health freak and my kids have snacks, but cooking meat with these is just crazy. I don't care how tender it becomes or how great it tastes, feeding this as a meal is equal to feeding your family super snacks as their nutritional boost and then sending them to bed. Those soup mixes are quite literally poison and my daughter who is 5 and was suffering form terrible migranes was cured simply by cutting out sugar, processed meats such as salami and any of those horrid soup mixes.

Don't we all want our kids to be at their optimal health? We work so so hard for our families all day long (and most of the night too) so why take a shortcut like soup mix when you can sautee a bunch of onions with spices and not have all that msg and the other garbage?

My pediatrician (who is main stream medically and isn't into homeopaths for most people) told me that he can't believe there are still mothers who cook with that stuff.

I am not trying to sound holier than thou or condescending. I just want to let you know just how truly dangerous that stuff is.

I fully realize that a roast wioth Coke, ketchup and onion soup mix is about as unhealthy as it gets and loaded with sugar, MSG and sodium. I am making this once for a treat, since we rarely have red meat.

also, I just realized why my package of kalichle looked weird, it was cut into big chunks of roast instead of left whole (it's "shin meat" according to Fresh Direct). I think it'll still be fine if I cook it the same way.

here's my brisket recipe which I suppose would work for any red meat...

layer bottom of roasting pan with onion slices and place brisket on top. pour 1 can of coke over the brisket. sprinkle garlic salt and a little pepper over the brisket. Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake 325 for 3 hours (be sure to check every now and then to make sure it isn't getting dry - if it is, just add a little water).

Okay, so cooking with prepared foods isn't the healthiest thing in the world...but in moderation, I don't think it is the worst thing either. If a brisket is serving 8 people and you pour one coke on it each serving is really getting very little of the soda (even less when you remember that there's a lot of pan juices which we usually don't eat) - maybe maybe 3/4 of an oz? I just don't see it as a big deal. (Certainly the doctors in my family are fans of my brisket too!). Of course, I don't have kids with health problems/food sensitivities/ etc. either, so that makes a difference.

The thing that does drive me crazy, however, is that at SCHOOL the kids get all this nosh that I try not to buy or only buy for shabbos party...

Dvorah, I don't agree. Your child is sensitive, so for you all that's a necessity.

But most of us can eat meat a few times a week and be at good health....and what about chopped liver, deli (organ) meats, kishke - all that is health food?

No, it's not.

Battles are a matter of choice.

choc, there is nothing wrong with meat - we eat it quite often. If you read my post you will see that I wrote processed meat which means salami etc which is full of junk. If you have ever seen the process of making salami or hot dogs, trust me you would never feed it to your dog never mind your family. Soup mixes aren't a "battle" they are quite simply horrible for you. Everyone can choose what they feed their loved ones, it just baffles me why someone would willingly give that to their children.

Good point Chani, one can of Coke for a whole roast is miniscule-- I'll bet lots of us here drink multiple cans of soda a day! The ketchup too is probably a small amount for each brisket eater, probably less than you'd eat with a serving of fries.

The only inexcusable part is the onion soup mix, which is totally awful and we use it as a crutch to make things taste yummy! (There is a camp that says MSG isn't as bad for you as it's made out to be, but there's still a load of sodium).

Not all soup mix has msg...as far as the coke, that's pretty much the only time we use soda in the house at all, and we only eat roast on yom tov (not every yom tov), so it's only a few times a year...so....but your points are very valid...anyway, here's the "recipe"

Sear the meat on the stovetop, then place in roasting pan. Sautee 1-2 million onions (or however many you like Wink ) and place on top of the meat. Pour coke and sweet red wine over the meat. Cover and bake at 350 until tender.

Btw, I tried it last yom tov without the coke - with just the wine - the meat was not NEARLY as soft! But I do have to agree with you dvora - in our house it's a yom tov treat.
