I thought my parakeets were too young to make good eggs but here we are, with 5 empty eggs and a baby already as big as my thumb.

The only thing is, I have no idea how to take care of them. I just read that the number one reason birds pass on is from lack of good nutrition. My parakeets and love birds are so picky, they seem to not want variety. But maybe I'm not feeding them something irresistible.

I'm wondering if there is special bird food for 'nursing' parakeets. What should I be feeding them, to help them nurture their baby?

And any tips in general on how to care for this little parakeet family?

LOL. We have a Parakeets imamother here? Just in case, I tried changing the title to 'my parakeets' - not sure if the change went through.

I did google, but I think I'm just wanting some support. I'm afraid I'm going to mess this up somehow.

My mom's parakeets could never resist peanut butter. Give that a try!

Call a vet the specializes in birds, and see what they have to say.

Mazel Tov on the new addition! Very Happy

Aww, Mazal tov:) just make sure to hand feed the baby (what do you call them?) people pay a lot to get hand fed ones.

I had one I hand fed and trained, it's pretty awesome. He imitated my whistles and nodded yes and no.

Good luck!

When can I take the baby out of the cage? And I read somewhere that I'm supposed to take the baby out before the father gets aggressive. Is all this true??

I don't know about the father being aggressive, could be you need to separate them.
I only had one parakeet.
You can take him out pretty much right away but they don't fly well yet and might fall so it's best to wait.
Some people clip their wings which helps so they don't fly away. I didn't but it's pretty hard to catch them when you let them loose unless they're trained.

Is there a bird breeding forum somewhere online? Many people keep them as a hobby. Enthusiasts.

That video helped a lot! Now I can figure out how old the baby is, and proceed from there. I think she's about 15 days old.

Thank you!!

our parakeets had babies numerous times. My husband mixed in egg shells to the regular diet we gave the birds. I will ask him what else... We found that we had to separate them from their mother as she used to fight with them a lot.

Small bean, are you sure about the eggshells? Chickens who are fed eggshells for the calcium develop a taste for the flesh of their own chicks unless the shells are first roasted in an oven till they turn a bit brown. I don't know if using the shells from another species works the same way, but it might. This may be why your mother birds were attacking their chicks.

I had several budgie nests, I always provide eggfood , a mineral block, sepia and greens / carrot , and decent amount of water on top of normal seed . Do not remove the male as both parents provide for the chicks . All should go well dont worry

Zaq, we did give it to them. (my husband made me save all the egg shells) regarding chickens (and ducks) my husband fed them both chicken and eggs and none of them have ever been aggressive. I don't know if that's why the mother bird was like that or not though - I have nothing to do with the pets -their my husbands domain...
