Just putting that out there, to save people from it.

I couldn't find nut oil this year, saw this, and decided to give it a try. It is thick and has a really, really heavy taste. Yech. I was running low on grapeseed oil and used it to make rolls, and they are well neigh inedible.

Are you sure it wasn't rancid?

Positive.

It didn't taste off. It just tasted very heavy.

I ran out to buy more grapeseed oil before work this morning, since I'm having guests the second days, and don't want them near this stuff.

Hmm, so what do people use it for? It must be good for something, no?

I have used it on salads before and enjoyed it (I like avocados in my salad too) but I believe the unrefined avocado oil is not meant to be heated in any way. It is also used in beauty care like coconut oil. Maybe don't throw it out and use it as a leave-in conditioner! Refined avocado oil should work in baking.

Maybe the brand you bought is just not good? I recently found out that it is not safe to fry in olive oil, which I did often. Avocado is safe to heat to extremely high temperatures so I use it now for frying and it tastes exactly the same to me. I wouldn't use it in baking though...

Yeah, I'd use Coppertone myself.
And Barbara, I think it's just the meter of the title - two word subject is something. But immediate reaction? "And Soylent Green is etc."
Thanks for the heads up though. Sometimes we have to roll with the punches, especially when we make rolls we feel like punching. Have a great yom tov!

What brand was it? I never had bad avocado oil, it was always light and no taste, Chosen? Also, the one I got at the kosher store, might have been a heimishe brand, was good.
It just occurred to me, you might have gotten an old bottle!

This thread is from 2015 (and I think Barbara sadly no longer frequents imamother.com)

I'm hoping the manufacturing processes have changed in the intervening years. We bought avocado oil spray this year for the first time...

This thread is from 9 years ago, FYI. If the bottle wasn't old then, it sure is now..

Extra virgin avocado oil smells like a dirty diaper. Its truly disgusting. The other, refined, version is totally fine, neutral taste, I use it exclusively

I use the Chosen brand and almost flavorless , just a healthier oil and universal for cooking and baking. You can get it from Costco both in oil and spray form for a fraction of the price than the kosher stores.
