Quote: | The Rambam maintains that the biblical obligation to engage in Simcha extends beyond the obligation to offer and consume Shalmei Simcha (sacrifices). The Rambam (Hilchot Yom Tov 6:17-18 ) writes:
A person is obligated to be happy on these days, he, his children, his wife, his grandchildren, and all those who have joined his family, as the Torah states, "and you shall rejoice on your holiday." Even though the Torah is referring to the obligation to offer and consume Korban Shelamim (the Shalmei Simcha), included in this obligation to rejoice is for a person and his entire family to rejoice in the manner that is appropriate for him.
How is this practiced? One distributes parched grain, nuts, and delicacies to the children. One purchases, depending on what he can afford, clothes and beautiful jewelry for the women in the family. The men eat meat and drink wine, as there is no rejoicing without meat and wine. |
okay! so did you buy clothes and jewelry yet?
I don't get clothing AND jewelry, but try to get something new.

foreveryoung - seems you missed some key words in the halacha:
Quote: | One purchases, depending on what he can afford, |
I was talking to a woman at a wedding the other week and complimented her on her earrings. She said they cost $2.
each according to his means

I love shopping but have a rule: When shopping don't have in mind that you must get item xyz bec you will never find it but if you find something you love but don't need it buy it and keep it for later bec when you need it you won't find it. It is very hard for me to find clothing that fit since I am petite and short. I usually go to outlets of nice clothing companies, like Jones New York, that way it isn't expensive and I can get petite sizes. Otherwise the $ I spend altering -shorten sleeves and skirt take in sholders and fix neckline-cost more than the clothing.

Hate shopping...not me... I love shopping... My favorite places to shop are the closeout stores like marshells and tjmax. I do like shopping especially with credit cards...all you do is swipe...and its paid....but not really cause you get a big bill at the end of the month.
So did I get my new stuff...I like to have atleast something new..a pair of socks and new tichel... usually a pair of socks.
but this year an aunt of mine bought me a nice necklace and im saving it for yom tov. I actually got it tonight. Even if we don't have money we have to treat ourselves once and awhile just alittle even with a pair of socks.
