I made gefilte fish a few weeks ago and left the flame on too high and burned the pot very badly. I decided it's high time I tried to clean it embarrassed - any suggestions on how to get all the burnt stuff out?

I did the same! Pour liberal amount of Ajax cleanser to cover bottom of pot, add a little water and let soak overnight, or several hours. It softens up the burned on shmutz, which will scrape off readily. Or spray with cold grease remover /oven cleaner - I use Bagi - Shunamit, and let sit a while.

What about me? I tried to clean out a burned pot a few days ago by putting in some water and putting it over the flame covered for the junk to soften, and ended up leaving it too long, all the water cooked out and the pot is BLACK now. (no gunk anymore, I got that out, but the actual pot is black.) Is there any hope for cleaning it now, or will it be a garbage pot forever?

That's the reason it's called kedeirah. Pots get black! (dark)
That's what happens when you kasher a pot over the fire.
Just enjoy your koshered, colored pot, as long as it does the job! LOL

Actually only the bottom of the fish got burnt, and the rest tasted really good.

Thanx for all the ideas, I think I'll try withhumor's idea- it's the most natural and the one I need to scrub the least with.

Now I just need to get up and do it Wink

There is an AMAZING stainless steal cleaner called "Bar keepers friend". I once burnt a VERY expensive pot liek that and tried EVERYTHING to save it. I thought it was garbage. Then I tried this cleaner, granted, it takes some scrubbing but the pot looks like new! If nothing else works, THIS WILL!
