Many times I've tried bleaching a white load. and it doesn't work. I test it by also putting in one black piece (like a sock or s/t) and I think the black piece should come out blotchy if the bleach worked but it never did. I put some bleach directly into the wash mach on the clothes and some in the little draw where I put the detergent. So, what am I doing wrong?

The only time I've ever gotten bleach to work is when I accidently left the washer full of water and bleach overnight (forgot to close the lid).

whenever I do a bleach load I use hot water.
do you think I need to soak the load for a few hours mid-cycle?
