People asked me about this on the chumras thread, so I'm reviving this thread.

To clarify:
Some people don't use water because using water involves the use of electricity. (not sure how)

Not everyone uses generators; some don't use them because it would be maris ayin and people would still think they are using electricity on Shabbos. (I understood that from how the Chazon Ish paskened you can't use a generator). Some don't use them because of the expense.

Again, this only applies in Israel, because of the electricity company having Jews working for them.

Pumps run by electricity are used to supply water to different elevations.

He may be suffering for a mental condition which causes a person to have a hang-up on frum things and overdo it to the point where they do cannot connect how it is affecting his life and his loved ones. Stay out of it, and hope and pray he is consulting a rav.

Withhumor, just b/c someone is going by an opinion that you are not familiar with/ not what your rav paskens, doesn't mean that he has a mental condition. shock

There was a headline a little while ago in the Post that the IEC was hiring Arabs to work on Shabbat so that the electricity would be "kosher". They said their primary motivation for doing so was the danger that little generators can pose to the public when there are a lot of them running in tight spaces.
