Dyeing Socks?? | Imamother

I have a bunch of pairs of black socks and they are in perfect condition except that their color has faded to a blueish grayish color. I was wondering if there is a way to re-dye them black and if anyone ever had success with this? I would not even know where to buy dye.

prob. a craft store. do you have a sink you won't ruin or treif up in the process?

it might not be worth it.

RIT - makes all colors - where you buy shoepolish - and if the dye is fading so is everything else - I would think or...

The socks are a few months old and they cost like $4 for each pair- I really would not like to throw them out.

in my opinion, dying socks seems like one of the biggest wastes of time.

go buy some cheap socks then and don't waste your life away dying socks. life is too short.

Okay go ahead & dye them - but isn't it easier to buy socks for $1 - that's my price range when buying socks & nice ones too! You just have to look. Are they men's socks. 4 mos isn't old at all. If they're from a place like gap or dept store Macy's or such they would exchange them and consider it defective.

They have directions on package - I believe it's messy though

I'd just throw them in with something black that runs....
Rit works well. I've used it to dye things that have become stained. First clean them then redye them a darker color. Usually hides the stain fairly well. (I've also embroidered over small stains.)

but I kind of like the greyish black color; looks more homely imho. Perhaps get a few new socks for outfits that have to be washed, and keep these for most outfits?

my husband dyes his socks! He says they usually sell the dye in the hardware store - about $3! GO FOR IT!
(my husband says he doubles the dye for cotton - it seems to work better)

Since it is as simple as making a reg load of laundry instead of laundry detergent you use the dye. ANd no need to wet clothes before hand just plonk in, Also one rit clothes dye can do a lot more then just socks. Like faded shabbos pants at the knees it can look brand new again.
So e.g. 8 prs of socks and two pants for a mere 3.00 is still cheaper then havinmg to buy.

Will the dye run out the first time you wash them? Do you have to wash separate the first time?

Nope if you put in a hot dryer on max temp .

I have dyed stasined shirts or t-shirts colors so that they look brand new. My husband has alot of blue and nice grey shirts which I dyed from the original white b/c of stains that I could not remove. Psss I have dyed undergarments and sheets, faded old towels too.

Note it will not work though if a good portion of the material is a synthetic fibre
