even though americans are illiterate, they make sence in this case, b/c

MOBILE phone is used in an AUTOMOBILE - attached to it.

Cellular phone can be used anywhere.

Since they both use the same technology, they both can be called cell phones.

Um, sorry for getting into the semantics, but "mobile" just means you can take it around wherever you go. The ones that were just in cars were called car phones in the US (I don't know what they were called in other places.) The first "mobile" (not car phone!) I saw was in 1991 in this little suitcase that weighed a ton. My b-I-l would walk around with it, and suddenly the suticase would start to ring, he would open up the suitcase and take out what looked like a really old-fashioned receiver, attached to the box with a curly phone wire.

How times have changed!!!! I feel really old.....

Yes I have noticed Frelich your little way of trying to get more posts by saying one thing...cunning, I give you that.
Mobile phone makes more sense because mobile means you can take it anywhere, car phones are car phones...my father got one so us kids decided it was so cool, so we went into it when it was in the garden and dialed the house phone, my mum picked it up and went crazy coz it is so expensive...that is one thing that has never changed. Expensive calls from mobiles or car phones.
I use mine so little I spend less than £10 a month. Same with my house phone, but that is coz I get free calls evenings and weekends only to UK landlines though. But I have a cheap number to call the US, so even though I call my brothers and sis I still didn't spend more than a tenner on my house phone...I feel really great!
