Does anyone have experience with this? DH was in a major accident tonight (BH BH BH he's ok) and now, among other things, the two car seats that are in his car have to be disposed of. I'm hoping my insurance company will cover them and I was wondering if there's anything I need to know etc.

Thanks!

Your insurance company should cover them, yes. I don't know what you may need to know, but I've never heard of someone having a problem getting them replaced.

I think they only need to be replaced if a child was in it during the accident but I'm not 100% sure.
I bought my baby's new car seat a day after our accident and then submitted to insurance for reimbursement.

No, no no! It has nothing to do with whether or not a child was in the seat at the time of the accident.

OP, your insurance should definitely cover the costs of new seats (though it may not cover the whole cost...they might tell you they cover "replacement value" which means if you can buy a seat for $150 that's what they'll give you, even if your particular seat is/was over $200).

When I was once in a car accident, I submitted my receipts for replacement car seats and my insurance deducted 10% per year of the child's age - so it was 10% unpaid for the 1 year old's seat and 30% unpaid for the 3 year old's.

Why? That doesn't make sense. What if your 3 yo's seat was brand new and you could use it for 6-7 years, passing it down to the 1 yo??

My insurance replaced the car seat in full after an accident.

No clue why...it's been like 6-7 years... And this insurance company is known to be more generous! And we only found out after we bought. But meanwhile, according to the AAP guidelines in the case of that accident, none of the seats really needed to be replaced...

Thanks everyone. When the adjuster comes to assess the car he will assess the value of the car seats as well and as soon as that's done I can purchase new ones and submit my receipt.
