Well I dont know (yet at least) if I am having a boy or girl. Of course I am looking at baby name books but I wanted to ask all of you what names, preferably not the VERY VERY common ones (like Sarah, Rachel... although no offense at all to ppl who have these names or who have kids with these names. They are obviously BEAUTIFUL names if the imahot had them... I am just looking for slightly less common) you like.

this seems terrible to say but - I have trouble w/some families that keep naming their kids and their kids name their kids same names cause they're after rebbe or rebbetzin. Especially when they have a family name to name after...
Anyway - the name will come to you in time - don't worry.

I like the names Dovid, Daniel, Aaron, Moshe, Yehuda, Dov, Shua for boys.
And I like the names, Shayna, Kayla, Shoshana, Leora, Deena, Yael, Rachelli, Meira, Shevi, for girls.
If we have a girl I would like to name her Shayna, but DH doesn't like the name and it would work out perfectly with the person's name we want to name after. It might take some convincing.
I have no clue what to name if we have a boy, although I like all the names above we can't use any of them.

OP here.
1st-
I really like many of the names you suggested. We already used one of the boys' names and considered others. This time we're looking at about 2 or 3 of the other boy names on your list and 2 or 3 girls names too.
Thanks so much. Keep 'em coming

You should most definitely ask a rov - it can really cause bad mazel for the child, ch"v. Only with parents you should name for someone niftar before the age of 60. That's what our rov says, but of course, ask your own.

This is somewhat a related question. We've been getting a lot of pressure to name after a specific family member. Besides that we don't actually like the name, the person was not frum and no one seems to remember any stories about him that would cause us to want to name for him. I know there's a whole thing about a name really having meaning and affecting a person's traits, etc. Is it terrible to disrespect our parents and not use the name for this reason?

ask your rav, some will forbid, some say to add a name or name for him + someone else, some say to just give the name.

I have a question not entirely unrelated to this forum. I am expecting in April and feel as though it might be a girl (even though we have 6 sons and only 1 other daughter....but that's another story)
I have just been looking into my DH family in Poland (Jiezerna/ Galicia). His Great grandmother died after a pogrom in 1915? as she refused to go to the hospital and be treated by a male doctor and tried to look after her wounds at home (or so the story goes). Her name was Sossie (I have no idea of age). Does anyone have an idea what it A. means, B.is it the yiddish version of a hebrew name. It is spelt samech, Alef, Shin, Ayin. I have asked around but noone seems to ask. I was told to ask someone in the Adas (hungarish) community because of the towns location but I don't really have a connection to anyone there...
A granddaughter of the woman named after her was killed in the shoah also so I would be adding a name. Still have to ask a shiloh with my Rav and still need some convincing as all my children have hebrew names not Yiddish but I feel an urge to use it!.)(a very strong urge!!)
In the end the baby will probably be a boy and then it won't matter!!
But any ideas would be much appreciated!!!!

You could look at it that the Neshama will have a Torahdik life now...
However, since you don't like the name, why not use the first letter of the name?
In addition, after all is said and done, whatever you name the baby, the child will be loved by the grandparents.

Kmelion-
there is one specific one in your bunch that I like but can't use for whatever reason.
Chavamom-
I like a lot of yours. I also like Maayan but can't sell my husband on it.
I really appreciate all the help. Soon (not so soon, but soon) I'll know if it's a boy or girl so it can get halfway easier! Mark my words though... I am betting on a boy. (Although when I bet on my sisters I am almost always wrong! But I am convinced!!)

TY. You'll find most of my kids names on the list . What is it with these men not liking the name Maayan? If I'd had my way, that would have been Batsheva's name (there she is, over to the left - NOT Maayan, lol) .
