any ideas on what to get? I had the snugride 32 till now but I have to take off my baby's coat in order for the straps to fit. I think we're ready for an upgrade. she's 36" and in the 22-40 lbs catagory. any ideas?
p.s. I'm not made of money ;-)

You ALWAYS need to take off a puffy coat before putting a child in a car seat, no matter how big the seat/straps are! We go through this pretty regularly here, unfortunately... the straps need to fit to your CHILD, not to a bunch of stuffing, in order to hold them properly in a crash C"V.
That said, at 36" the kid probably is ready for a bigger seat anyway. Sorry, I don't have a specific recommendation, I have a TrueFit which is very popular but very wide (doesn't leave much room in the next seat...), not that easy to install rearfacing (don't know of others are better), and isn't that cheap (I got a great deal on it, maybe you could too)

Seeker, I'm so curious why you have such a bad taste in your mouth from the TrueFit! I actually found it one of the easiest car seats to install, especially in situations without LATCH since it has built in lockoffs. Seriously, we install it rear facing every single week, and it takes about 3 minutes to get a good install in our vehicle. Also the width is actually standard, and even less than some others on the market -- it looks big because of its depth, but in actual measurements, it's not wider than most convertibles on the market.
OP, you need a convertible seat. What type of vehicle do you have? What is your budget? Any specific features you're looking for?

HY, like I said, I don't know if other seats are better. I got the TrueFit because it had great ratings and the ones that seemed to get more love were just so much more expensive I couldn't even think about it (Britax seems popular among those in the know? But close to $300?!) But I haven't had any other yet so you're probably right that it's no wider, it's just that with any seat of that size my middle passenger gets smooshed pretty badly. And maybe other seats in this class are even harder to install. Truthfully it got a lot easier once I got the hang of it, but the first time was a REAL struggle, and even last time I needed to do a lot of pulling and re-doing until I got it nice and snug.

And to luv2cook4eva, not sure what I did to merit threats of sarcasm, I was really just trying to be helpful. Or at the very least bump up your thread for people with more info than just my personal review of my one seat. Will be listening for the answers because #2 seems to be growing taller faster than I'd expected KA"H and we will need another convertible too!

OP, how old is your baby and how much does she weigh? (22-40 lbs doesn't help me!) Are we looking for a car seat that rear faces longer because she's on the heavier side, or are we going to be ok with one that RF till 30 lbs (like my kids, though they RF till 3 -- they have never actually used the 35 lb limit on the TF)...
If you don't need high rear-facing limits and you want a budget friendly car seat, try the Evenflo Triumph. You can get that for $125 or less I believe.

I think I have this one http://m.toysrus.com/skava/sta.....s.com
It's affordable and its a great seat. You can keep the child RF until 40 lbs in it. Ds RF until he was almost 3, and he still didn't go over the weight limit (he is v v tall so I turned him because he was complaining of discomfort by then). Now he's FF and still very comfortable. It installs easily w latch, fine without. The knobs on the side to adjust the straps are super convenient.

I do need the convertible. dd weighs 20 lbs. I have a regular sedan (camry) with no other kids so she has the entire backseat to herself.
my budget I guess would be up to 125 or so... thats about how much I paid for the snugride

Just as a side note, kids often outgrow seats or rearfacing limits by height before weight. So if your kid has a tall/lean build like mine you probably don't want to get distracted by the weight limits which is what they tend to advertise loudest, and look instead at the heights.

Don't know about the seat specs but there's an excellent price on Britax Marathon at Target today (or is it all week? not sure) might be online only. Saw it on kosheronabudget.com. $112 if you have a Red Card

I don't know of any real car seat that can become a booster later. Plus a booster is only like 20-30 dollars so it's not a big expense.

The ones that become boosters function VERY poorly as boosters. It's not worth it. It's cheaper to get a nicely priced convertible and then a standalone booster, and you might actually benefit from that, since you end up with 2 seats instead of just 1. (E.g. use for future kid, or put in a second vehicle)

Hijacking this thread to ask for recommendations for a convertible carseat that will fit in a back seat (of a Chevy - don't know widths, but I think it's pretty standard) together with a Graco Snugride infant seat, and an Evenflo convertible seat (I don't know which "type" of evenflo, but it was $59 or so on sale ... how come all the linked ones are so much more than that?)
Would anything work, or do I need something specifically narrower?

That'll be fun... maybe post on car-seat.org, they have people who have tried all kinds of combinations.

a radian is narrow but pretty expensive.
the real issue is how they "puzzle" together (or so s/o tells me)
If possible I would go to a store like babysrus where they let you take the seats to your car and try them out to see how it fits. try it ff and rf. it may be worthwhile to try with a booster and no infant seat too...
