I want to make my own tartar sauce. Any delicious recipes out there that sort of taste like Hellman's brand?

Oh.

Well, you might get something good, but not Hellman's'esque.

I have no idea what "real" tartar sauce tastes like, because my family was makpid on not eating tartaric acid.

So my father makes what he calls tartar sauce. I have no idea how close it is to the original.
Basically a 3:1 ratio of mayo to mustard, add in some lemon juice, onion powder, and finely chopped pickles (relish is too sweet for our taste buds, but others use that). For Pesach, he skips the mustard and uses onion soup mix to flavor it instead, so that might work for some people as well.

It goes well with fish, in my opinion Smile

Thanks! The recipes online all call for relish, which I don't have. Do you think Israeli pickles will work? Also, spicy mustard? That's all I got.

Can't hurt to try. It might have more zing than what you're used to, but I think adding a bit more mayo might tone it down.

This is great! Dunno what the Hellman's tastes like... but here goes
1 cup mayo
1/4 cup pickle juice
2 sour pickles
2 T sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 clove garlic crushed
1 T dill(optional- I left it out since I didn't want to buy a whole container of dill for just 1 T. - it was perfectly good, but the dill does give a nice color to it!)

Didn't end up making it because didn't end up making the fish. I had planned to make it fresh on y't but dh and I were so stuffed from the day meals, we could hardly eat at night.

ETA: I will definitely make a recipe one of these days. Thanks everyone!

I make it all the time. It's a huge hit and so easy!
I don't measure but I'll estimate for you...

1/2 cup Mayo
1/2 CAP of Lemon Juice
1-2 large pickles (depends on the amount ur making)
2TBSP Dill
Salt and Pepper to taste

Its that easy!!
* note that I wrote CAP, NOT cup
