This is my first time with my own class.

3rd Grade last year I was a coteacher in a 2nd grade class with a very experienced teacher.

Are you having an assistant? If yes, than she can hand out books and assign lockers while you begin teaching. I like to start teaching right away, and I even give some homework the first day in order to set the tone. Especially this year since there is so much time still before yom tov. Good luck! It's been a while since I had a class of my own, now I do pull-out. But my general beginning formula is some kind of introduction/ice-breaker, explanation of routines/expectations (e.g. supplies needed, lockers, if I have a big long-term program I want to introduce) and then an activity or assignment that will give me some idea of the kids' current level. A little worky to get into school mode but nothing too scary - maybe a math puzzle worksheet using skills that they should have done last year, and a small writing-and-illustrating assignment on a nice neutral chilled-out topic.
