Calling all Yiddishists:
Ds came home with the expression "shtoltzy" which I gather means "classy, elegant, pish-posh".
Is this a genuine Yiddish word or is it one of those phony made-up pseudo-Yiddish yeshiva-bocher words like "shtoddy"? (The correct Yiddish word is "shtottish", meaning "of or pertaining to the city" --as opposed to the country--which by extension means elegant and stylish.)

To the best of my knowledge, "shtoltz" in Yiddish means proud. My grandmother uses this word to describe someone who is well dressed, clean, well mannered etc.

I'm a purist. If you speak a language, speak a language. Don't mix half-and-half. If you're new to the country and don't know the word for something in the language of that country, ask--and then use the correct word.

To me shtolzy is a negative connotation to someone who is too proud.

shtoltz is proud it can be good as in being proud of your yiddishkeit or proud as in haughty.

I thought it was "shtotty" or "shtotzy". We used that as kids to refer to people or things that are fancy.
