Oz it is not like an ear-ing it cannot be taken out at whim.
I know coz I took someone with it in asked 2 shailohs b/4 since some rings can only be taken out by proffessionals, as opposed to reg earings!

I have 2 holes in each ear. I have had them since I was in high school. We asked if I should take it out and was told I did not need to. However, we did not ask if it was okay to do in the first place (as I did it before I would care about such things) so I suspect the answer might have been different.

motek- my father said the same thing about it being a mum. He always said: After you're married you can do what your husband says.
I got my ears pierced when I was pregnant with my first. They got all infected so I let them close up again. I would like to try again though (my husband has bought me atleast 4 pairs of earrings which I can't wear now)
My daughter I'm going to wait till she's ready to deal with it - bacitracin and all that stuff otherwise she'll be complaining about it too much

I have two holes in one ear, because the woman who pierced my ears did them crooked and I needed to straighten them out...I had mine pierced by a lady in Williamsburgh, who did it with a needle and thread. I guess she didn't know how to sew a straight seam . At one point the idea crossed my mind - hey, I could probably wear two earrings in one ear! But I figured I would be excommunicated (besides, I didn't really want to, just a thought.) The second hole (or the first, actually) never closed up, though.

my mil wanted to have my daughter's (first) ears pierced on her first birthday. I wouldn't let her, not in a million years!! my parents told me to have my ears pierced when I was old enough to take care of them, and with self earned money. they said, you were put on this earth whole and perfect, why put in extra holes? but I really wanted them, so had them pierced when I was 15.
both my daughters (7 and 5) want earrings, but I tell them that on their bat mitzwa iyh, if they still want, then I will take them. not before though.

I pierced my daughters ears when she was a couple of months old. I would definitely do the same again. She is now a year and a half and doesnt know that they exist. She never touches them since to her they are a part of her like anything else.
Also, about the Lub. Rebbe's view on this. My husband wasn't crazy over the idea, so he checked it up. I can't remember the exact answer, but it definitely didn't say not to, since we did it. I'll ask my husband for the source!

I pierced my girls ears at a month old. like someone said it becomes attached to them and they don't even realize it. If the rebbe did say so then why does a lot of lubavitchers have pierced ears way before twelve?

Interesting thread.
Ozmom - Do you think it would be Tzniusdik to walk down the street nowadays dressed like a woman from 3,000 years ago? I have a feeling that would attract lots of attention, and therefore is not Tznius, even though that's how righteous Jewish women of those days dressed.
In Tznius there is an issue of Pritzas Geder, meaning not doing what is not accepted in your community. The fact that over 3,000 years ago it was accepted has no bearing on the matter. (Actually, I'm sure you knew that )
Concerning the Lubavitcher Rebbe's answer about waiting 'till Bas Mitzvah. I have not yet seen a source for this besides hearsay and Rabbi Dalfin's book, and I have heard that it may be a misinterpretation of the Rebbe's letter, which did not say it that clearly. Has anyone here seen the original letter?
I believe that what the Rebbe did say is that piercing ears is preferable to using clip ons, since the pain of piercing once is preferable to the constant pain of clip-ons.
I can understand the personal Hergesh of its being a Mum, but I don't think that has any basis in Torah sources, just in people's personal feelings.
In the "What to expect" books it advises waiting at least until the child is old enough to tell you if her ears hurt, because otherwise an infection can go for a while undetected.
And yes, my daughter is also waiting patiently until her Bas Mitzvah.
