Why would Jewish women be different than Jewish men?

Thumbs Up I agree with crayon, the prohibition against harming oneself applies to all jews regardless of gender.

Smoking amongst frum women is probably less common because of our roles as mothers of many children. When would one smoke? Pregnant, nursing, pregnant, nursing, pregnant......

A friend of mine stopped smoking before each pg, during & while she was nursing. Never smokes in her house. It's mind boggling why she feels the need to start again. It really is an adiction.

Maybe because you're drawing attention to the hands and to the face? And when the smell lingers on your clothing and hair it attracts attention (albeit negative) when you enter a room, etc.

I don't see how it is a tznius issue! Rolling Eyes

Frum women can and do smoke. You just don't see much of it. the only prohibition would be harming oneslf. And even that is not specific enough to cover smoking. Many rabbonim of old smoked or used snuff, it was even thought to be healthful at one time. People who smoke today KNOW the risks, some people choose to do it anyway!

so saith my husband. it definitely isn't the most refined or dignified thing to do, for a lady!

On par with perhaps drinking for women...

who said a frum woman can't smoke if she wants to.

as for the woman who can't understand why her friend keeps on going back to smoking #1) kol hakovad for your friend you stop smoking during preg... she most be a strong woman.#2) smoking is addictive just like alcohol and food... ever thought a person is crazy for eating when he so badly wants to lose weight??? same here.

I don"t find anything not jewish about woman smoking ... it's just not common and (I think disgusting and unladylike)...

just my two cents!

I know some very frum Jewish women who are closet smokers.

I dont see how it's immodest for a woman to smoke..
stupid and dangerous, ok. but untznius?

By the way, didn't Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka smoke cigarettes? I'm ducking the tomatoes, but I really think she had the habit-I've heard it discussed more than once.

Don't forget, a few generations ago, smoking was a very elegant, wordly and sophisticated thing to do-and quite ladylike. If she did, the Rebbetzin must have smoked before the ills of cigarettes were well known.

Can anyone confirm?

I have also heard it being a tznius issue, not sure where though. Friends of ours tell us that the pediatricians in Brooklyn almost never have to give the no smoking speech to girls, but the but boys start it in their teens.

I think it's not common to find women smoking because females are less prone to stupid, dangerous behaviors.

Although that wouldn't explain all the secular women who smoke. Hmm...

Well I can't answer that, but I still think part of it has to do with our biological makeup.

I never heard that it was assur for women as opposed to men. I heard it's assur for everyone.

not a question of assur, but of being inappropriate. Unseemly.

no, drinking can lead to drunkenness
a woman is not allowed to drink unless her father or husband is present, nothing similar for smoking

I think that what you wrote shows how it's NOT an addiction in her case! She smokes because she enjoys it and doesn't smoke at times when it will be harmful to her babies. Admirable. (not the smoking, but her restraint)

really? I didn't know that.
a woman can't drink to get drunk or can't drink at all unless her father/husband is present?
