I just used it this evening and checked the ingredients. It doesnt mention wine or anything else that wouldn't be kosher. |
It mentions spice extracts and if I had to guess I'd put my money on that being the problematic ingredient.

As far as I know you have to mention every ingredient, even if it's that little.

Raisin, I first read the second part of what you wrote in response to the skittles being not kosher and she can make it herself . I had to read it a few times, until I realized you were saying something to import.
They used to sell tomato paste like that in the states. I don't remember why they changed it though. What's good about in a tube, you don't have to use the whole thing and it's easy to save for later. We get it in glass jars, so I like it like that too.

That there's a non kosher product in the mayo. Now I'm just really curious as to what spice isnt kosher. Or is it more like they used one of the onion powders that have additives.

Dh's friend wanted to import Thomy mayonnaise to the US a few years ago and he spoke to one of the rabbanim in the kashrus commission about putting a hechsher on it. The rov explained to him why it's not possible.
BTW, this is what the kashrus list says about spices:
Quote: | Dried, chopped or powdered spices or herbs, on which only the pure spice ingredient is listed are permitted. Spice extracts, granulated spices, spice or herbs mixtures could be forbidden. |
Thomy mayonnaise has spice extracts as the last ingredient.

I can say that in Switzerland I have seen the Thomy stuff in some of the most strict houses, as in black coat etc.

Black coat doesnt automaticaly equal very strict in food. Not everyone considers london beis din a good hechsher or follow their list.

The rabbinate that issues the Swiss kosher list is more comparable to Kedassia, I would think.
And Ruchel is right - almost everyone here uses Thomy mayonnaise, even very frum people. There are probably some who don't, but they probably don't use anything else on the list either, and only use heimish hechsherim. (Which is extremely limiting here, as many fairly basic items such as pasta (and mayonnaise, if I'm not mistaken) are not carried in the kosher grocery, since everyone buys theirs in the regular supermarket.)

I was thinking if they just changed some teensy weensy ingredient, then maybe it is kosher (under the Thomy mayo logic), just not hecsherable.
Seems like there would be a huge number of foods which can fall this category. All the candies that are not under hecsher because they use carmine food coloring (yuck)? Heck, food coloring's gotta be in there in a volume proportion less than 1:60, right? Blammo! It's okay to eat.

You can get that in larger supermarkets. In the same section as "kosher" food (think gefilte fish jars and borscht) usually.
