"How's it going, Calliope?" Euterpe asked. "Have humans been writing as much epic poetry lately as they did before?"
"Not so bad," the Muse replied to her sister, "but they have taken the 'poetry' out of it. All their epics seem to be in film. Well, I don't mind. My job is to inspire, their job is to create. What about you? Have they been writing much lyric poetry?"
"To tell you the truth, sister, during the age they call the Romantic period, I thought my time had come, but lyric poetry has lost its popularity. They are almost afraid to feel. I am generous with my inspiration, but they have to be willing to access their emotions before my gift can do any good."
"Ain't that the truth," exclaimed Thalia as she strolled in, pulling off her comic mask. "It seems most humor these days is very superficial and flippant. I pour out my gifts liberally, but few take advantage. If it were not for Abbot and Costello, I would genuinely wonder if humans are capable of being funny anymore."
Erato and Melpomene wandered in hand in hand, surveying the scene. "You are always together, dear sisters," Euterpe murmured.
"Naturally!" they answered in unison. "Most great love stories are tragic, though humans forget that sometimes."
"What about sacred poetry?" inquired Polyhymnia. "Wouldn't you say that man's love for the Divine is always unrequited, while man's love for woman may sometimes lead to a happy ending?"
"That's your area of expertise, sister," replied Thalia, "though to my mind, humans usually make themselves ridiculous when they try to access the Divine."
"Not as ridiculous as they look during so-called modern dance," laughed Terpsichore as she glided past gracefully. "They seem to have forgotten everything I've ever taught them."
"I have nothing to complain of," interrupted Urania. "My mysterious science is more studied and more honored than ever before. Humans used to imagine all sorts of fanciful things about the stars, but now they study them seriously, and I could not be happier."
"What do you say, Clio?" asked Melpomene. "How is history proceeding lately?"
"What?"
"Hello, earth to Clio! You look like you're a million miles away! What do you think of this whole discussion?"
Clio looked up from surveying the earth, where a short, hysterical, frighteningly charismatic man with a funny mustache was making a speech that drew millions of loyal followers.
"Oh, nothing. I was just... spacing out."

Perhaps this can be moved to a forum with amother enabled and writers can use pen names when amother to hide their identity if needed.
Imamother is so full of talent.
Please don't close this. |

So thanks robynm for getting me to stay up so late with a 2wk old baby
Here's my piece. It's a first draft. Requests: please help me improve my writing: if you like it, pls tell me why and what specifically, how it made you feel and which part of the writing made you feel that. If you don't like it, or it doesn't spk to you, also be specific, and tell me how and where you think it could be improved. If you don't have much time just a constructive one-liner is appreciated. Thanks so much!
Spacing Out
Alaaarm
Out of bed
Modeh ani
Wash my hands
Kids join me
Dress, eat
Rush to school
Kids then me
Work to the rule
Plan, teach, interact
Pick up kids
Home, we’re whacked
Supper, bed, tidy up
Finally
Satisfied, productive
Sink into sleep
Alaaarm
I need some space in my life
Wide mental grasslands with empty blue skies
Where I can breathe fresh air deep and long
Room for my thoughts to wander
To amble slowly along winding paths
With no set destination or limit of time
And as I discover, uncover
My relaxation refocuses me
I remember where I want to go
Realise I had been running frantically
On the spot
Before
Spacing out
or
Tuning in?

First of all I think this is a great idea! but it definitely needs some fine tuning in order for everyone to really enjoy such a forum.
1-perhaps each topic can be in it's own folder with everyone's contributions in one place.
2-there should definitely be a commenting system so that people will know their work is being acknowledged which will encourage them to write more.
3-there should be a time limit on each topic-two weeks lets say so that we all kind of keep pace
4-a miscellaneous (sp?) folder for those with random inspirations.
I really hope this works out there is definitely a need for it!

I'd like to join, though maybe a closed forum would be a little less intimidating since I'm not yet secure of my writing.
Also, I'm more of a story person, haven't written poetry since my dark and confused teenage years:
I feel happy, I feel sad.
I feel good, I feel bad.
I feel joy, I feel pain.
I feel I can't go through all this again. |
all those emotions of the teenage years.. remember writing that... feeling all pain n joy in one shot... full strength writing . good!

I ponder at the topic,
“Spacing out”
Do I ever?
I’m sure I do.
Don’t we all?
Yet niggling within,
The truth.
I don’t space out,
I can’t space out.
I’ve got too much to do.
Too much to think about.
At times I wish,
To close the shutters of my mind.
Shush, quiet- PLEASE!
Can you move aside?
Why? When? Where?
What if? Then what?
Never ending.
Never content.
No, I’m not capable to spacing out!
