Anyone who teaches Halacha in the Kitzur S"A to 5th or 6th grade? Or any text based subject for that matter - How do you do it??? What do you do to make it interesting and interactive (even when the halochos are complicated) and stimulating and fun??? (a lot of criteria, huh? well that's what these wonderful talmidos need! But I'm a novice teacher - taking over another for a bit - and am a little at a loss.
(I'll have to start another thread on discipline with tough classes but yeah... another thread.)

I've never actually done this subject, but I would imagine the key is making it very relevant to their lives. A lot of practical "What would you do if..." and challenging the students themselves to come up with ways that the halacha might apply. Obviously you'd have to choose topics that work for this, some of the basics are not as engaging but once you get them thinking that halacha class is interesting you should be able to sneak in just about anything

What halachos on the curriculum? Maybe we can help you come up with hands-on, practical activities.

I taught halacha in 5th and 6th grade.
#1 thing to do is to join chinuch.org, they have lots of wonderful ressources.
What I did was I would write a short story, with a character put in a specific situation, and then say: What should she do? Why was he worng? What would you have done? And things like that.
The funny thing is if you put lots of different names on your charcters, the girls will find it funny and interesting

Thanks so much for your ideas! I'm teaching hilchos netilas yadayim L'seuda in the kitzur. I had a long session with my curiculum advisor on the phone and much of the hard aspects of the halacha are not included in the lesson. The point of using the kitzur is to give them skills of opening a kitzur.
I put the S'if on the board using a projector, underlined the key words with colorful markers and had them figure out the halachos... We then read it together and they wrote the S'if in short. They do know a lot of it so I ran into trouble. Giving them scenarios sounds like a good idea to try...
